Replacing what isn't broken ....

Ask:
Ok ladies, I'm feeling tempted here.

We have a 20 year old toaster oven (circa 1987) that use to be white and now is the color of stained yellow teeth. DH brought it into our marriage and it continues to work well and look worse year after year. The frugal in me and the environmentalist in me knows it doesn't need replacing because it still works. Dh would agree strongly. Nothing gets replaced in this house (including clothes) unless it gets used up or worn out.

Then this morning my kettle broke ... and I started having this terrible temptation to drop the toaster oven. Curse Black & Decker!

I'm confessing here to keep accountable. I will not drop the toaster. I will not drop the toaster.
Answer:

drop it!! drop it!! drop it!!

ooooooops I meant

don't drop it!! don't drop it!! don't drop it!!

Answer:

!!! Girl... you've suffered long enough... yall sound very frugal.. I think you deserve a new toaster!
Answer:

Things in the kitchen that don't have fairly new cords, or with the polarity plugs on them are a fire risk and should be replaced. My electrician told me anything before either 1990 or 92 - can't remember which; especially anything that generates heat (that includes blow dryers).

Make you feel better?
Answer:

Don't drop it, you might be sadly disappointed in the newer models these days. Talking from experience here, we got rid of our large microwave oven(1990's model) even though it still worked great, i just wanted a smaller, newer model that matched my kitchen better.BAD IDEA,,,,i hate the smaller one, it's louder, doesn't fit as much in it and now the defroster seems to start cooking items if you set if for longer than 10 minutes on defrost. We both hate the newer one and wished we kept the bigger older one despite the looks of it, it was a great appliance!
Answer:

If it were now the color of dirty stained teeth, I think it's time to say goodbye. You've certainly gotten your money's worth after 20 years!!! However, country mouse brings up a good point...maybe comprimise...keep the old one until you are satisfied with the new one.
Answer:

let me tell you new appliances are not what they are cracked up to be if ya have a good one...on the other hand how much electricity is that dinosaur using you could maybe justify it that way!!!!
Answer:

Donate it then buy a new one!
Answer:

I am also a neat freak....so for me my toaster has a spot in the cupboard it doesn't sit out-Ive had mine for a while but it's chrome and I keep it clean....I like the chrome appliances for just that reason...if Im lucky enough to have gotten a good one it wont turn colors.

If it's not broken DON"T replace it !!! Good thought!!!

I've been wondering the same thing. My in-laws had to get a new on last year and it lasted 10 months! I wonder if I could just spruce it up a bit.
