Do you do homework type activities over the summer?

Ask:
My dd will be done with kindergarten in a few weeks, and I was wondering what everyone does during the summer as far as educating goes. I found flash cards that are tricky words (some schools call them sight words--words that can't be sounded out and need to be memorized) and we will practice those. I have a few workbooks on the alphabet to keep her going with that as well. I'll also sign her up for the reading programs at the library and at Barnes and Noble.

Any activities you do that help with math? A friend told me the best thing you can do to help them understand fractions is to have them bake with you.
Answer:

Last year I didn't. I just let them be free. But this year my oldest is having some pretty major trouble and I intend to work with him a little bit everyday through the summer.

My little guy is a workaholic and enjoys doing worksheets. He gets them out and does them on his own. I don't know whose child he is.

Answer:

I have the kids use aplusmath.com or multiplication.com to practice their multiplication facts...it really seems to help them. They do about 10-15, every morning, Monday thru Friday. It's really quick and easy for us.

Other than that, my kids read voraciously...which is wonderful!

Answer:

I homeschool all year long (with lots of breaks). We don't really do worksheets that often, we READ tons everyday, that is the most important thing for that age! Stores like Lakeshore Learning Store are awesome with products if you have one close to you. There are free websites like enchantedlearning.com and letteroftheweek.com. You could get a math program from rainbow resource or sonlight are big homeschooling suppliers. Usborne books are great, especially their science and language books. You can go to the library every week and find books like Math Play, Science Play, Kids Learn America those kinds of parent resource books. Unit studies are fun for summer and a great way to tie all the subjects together, we are finishing gardening next week and will start insects, we love to grow butterflies in the butterfly pavilion we do that every summer. We do tons of arts and crafts, it helps build fine motor skills and attention span, not to mention the creative outlet. Just have fun, you don't have to sit at the table with worksheets everyday, make it fun and they will remember the material better!

cooking is great for math!
Answer:

I love edhelper.com You have to pay a small fee for it, but you can print worksheets for every grade and every subject. We're on year-round so I use it a lot during track breaks just to keep up on various things. It makes the transition back into school much smoother and they're usually ahead of the class.
Answer:

Like Oregano, I used aplusmath.com to generate worksheets for my dd. We also do a lot of reading over the summer.
