Time outs and Gotta go potty!!!

Ask:
my dd who is 5 well she is ina time out and had to go potty so I let her and made her come back and finish her time out!! she was compying to the time out (crying but still obeying the time out) I cant debate if I did the wrong thing or not!! she did come back and finsih then said sorry and all that!! would you let them get up and go? I just didnt want it to escalte to haiving an accident!! then it would have been worse!! what would you have done??
Answer:

I would if it's a isolated incident.
My little one started that business at naptime when he was potty training. Of course when I finally told him he couldn't go after what seemed like a billion cries wolf~ he pooped his pants & still hasn't forgotten it.

I think if it occurs again and again (like she thinks she's found a way to break out)~make it known that a potty break results in starting the time-out over. This way she'll either get it out of the way at the beginning, or have to wait it out. I think at 5 she can probably hold it for a couple of minutes.

Good Luck
Answer:

My son has Tourette Syndrome and 'accidents' is a big part of it so I know how frustrating that is! However, if she's 5 I'm guessing her time-out is about 5 minutes? That is a perfect opportunity for you to teach her how to 'hold it'. I would guess that unless a child has a physical problem, s/he can hold it for that little time. My bet is she's stalling Great job for her to finish and apologize!
Answer:

If you knew she really truly had to go then I think its fine, espically since she came back to finish the time out w/o problems. Now had she went within a reasonable time before the timeout and you knew this then I would have told she had to finish the t/o and then go. She is 5 so more than likely she could have held it if you do the t/o minute per age. I have a 4 yr old I sit for that tries the potty thing everytime I say no and he has yet to have an accident.
Answer:

yes this was an isolated one!! I did hear her goint too!! so I do think she had to go!! I dont like to make my kids hold it mostly cause they had bladder reflux and used to get Bladder infections!! (they were on antibiotics for a year!!) anyhow yes the time out was 5 min!! she knows if she didnt go right back the time out would have started all over again,
Answer:

You did the right thing My daughter is always busy and often a time out is the only time she slows down....and when they slow down they finally realize they have to use the bathroom. What counts is that you followed through with the time out.

Answer:

I feel you made the right decision. Especially since it was necessary. My kids have developed an overactive bladder approximately 45 sec. to 1 minute after they go in the corner or time out. This is an every time thing. When I can remember, I tell them to go potty before I issue the punishment. If they say they don't have to go, then I don't allow them to go while they are serving their time. They get 1 minute per year in their age. (7 and 8). So they are not in there for hours or anything like that.
Answer:

Thanks!! sometimes in the heat of the moment you woner if you did the right thing or not!!
