We just found out my 6 year old dd needs glasses. She is really self conscious and doesn't want to wear them (even if I think they will look cute).
Any advice on picking out glasses or helping transition her to wearing them?

Let HER pick them out (or at least let her think she is), don't overly (like obnoxiously, not that I am calling you that... LMBO) praise her for the way they look, she will know you're just trying to make her feel better. Could you maybe let her invite a friend to go with her to pick them out? I always WANTED glasses as a child, I thought they were cool. Yes, someone is bound to tease her, or call her 4 eyes. If they do, just teach her to say 2 extra eyes to see a fool with

I agree with letting her pick them out. My dh is an optician and sees parents being both helpful and the OMG what are they thinking types come in the office. Some parents actually have a fit if they hear their child needs glasses and do it right in front of the poor kids. The ones whose parents are supportive usually leave being excited about them. Good luck.

I second treehugger's suggestion to start with a book. I've had glasses since I was in second grade and I still have the book my aunt gave me when I got mine. I think it's called The Lucky Glasses.
Your daughter also may be a little less opposed to having glasses after she puts them on for the first time. I literally didn't know that my vision wasn't supposed to be blurry until I put on my glasses for the first time and could actually see things clearly!
They have some great kids frames out these days. I just got new glasses for myself last week and actually got a kids frame. I got the kind that are a little more flexible hoping they would withstand my boys messing with them a little better than my old frames. When I was a child, I started with huge frames and glass lenses...until my prescription got so strong that they had to switch me to plastic lenses. My dad was military and we spent a lot of time overseas, so for awhile I had little to no choice when it came to frames...I love having options now!
Just as a side note, if you get polyurethane lenses, you shouldn't need to get a scratch resistant coating (although they will try to sell you one). Consumer Reports looked at glasses awhile back and one of the things they said was the polyurethane is already pretty scratch resistant. I did, however, spend the money to get the coating put on my glasses simply becasuse they said it would also help with glare at night (not sure yet if it was a waste of my $37).

My dd has been wearing glasses for two years, but oddly enough, I don't know how to help you. My dd LOVES wearing glasses! She was thrilled when she found out she needed them. My dd is supposed to take off her glasses when she does up-close work and she forgets. I actually have to fight my dd to get her to take them off. She doesn't even want to take them off to go to bed! If I could figure out how to post a pic I'd post one of my dd so your dd could see what my dd looks like in her glasses. She has fair skin and reddish-brown hair and her pink glasses really compliment her features.
Along with the Junie B. Jones book about glasses, we have another one (a Fisher-Price book) about a 3rd grade girl getting glasses. It's called Jill's Glasses. The girl in the book looks almost exactly like my dd, so that book is my dd's favorite.
I also agree with letting your dd pick out her glasses. She'll be more willing to wear them if she gets to pick them out. Nowadays, kids have so many cute frame to choose from.

My ds has worn glasses since he was 2 1/2 yrs old for a lazy eye, he ended up with surgery and was able to stop wearing them for awhile but around 1st or 2nd grade he had to start wearing them again for nearsightedness (both dh and i have this problem also). He was never teased, actually the opposite, kids came up to him and told him how nice he looked with them. They do have an awesome collection of kids frames now, even the medical assistance (Medicaid) styles have improved greatly over the years!!! Make a day of it, maybe take her to lunch , let her pick out her own carrying case for her glasses. Takes time but i think she will end up enjoying them.

maybe she will get lucky and nobody will tease her...I never was teased and I had to start wearing them in 4th grade......now my dd is 10 and had to start wearing them last yr and nobody teased her.......I do recomment the flexon frames...they are soooo durable...not cheap but you wont have to replace frames for a while as long as they fit her face
