16 month old diaper struggles

Ask:
Has anyone had their baby absolutely hate getting their diaper changed? DS#2 has never liked getting his diaper changed. When he was a newborn, he peed on me at least 9 times! My other children never peed on me. As he's gotten older, he fights me screaming and kicking almost every time I change his diaper. It's especially hard when he has a really poopy diaper, since it tends to get everywhere when he does this. It's not just me, either. It's anyone that changes his diaper. I've learned NOT to change his diaper when he first wakes up, because that's when he fights the worst. I have to give him some food, and after his tummy has something in it, he is better about the diaper. Does anyone have any experience that could give me some suggestions? We try to give him a toy or book to look at while we change him, but a lot of times, it just gets thrown in anger.

TIA!!

I feel so bad for you. I've babysat kids like that, but was fortunate to not have that problem with my own. I can't say it's because of what I've done or their dispositions, but I can only tell you what I do and have always done.

I change them on a changing table or a pad on the dresser - there's nowhere to go. If I change them on the bed, couch or floor, they are ready to run! I have a mobile that has a large mirror on the wall above their head. When they get antsy, I have them tell me what is the sun, moon or star on it, and point out the patterns. I also have stickers on the wall above them and straight ahead, and try to distract them by teaching them the names of the animals and designs. Now dd is old enough I can ask her the name and she tells me. But I've always used changing time as a little bit of play time, singing time (they love to fill in the blanks - ds used to finish the eieio on Old McDonald at a very young age. I would also do animal sounds and have them guess them or have them give me the sounds when I name an animal. I guess they just get too busy to try to mess around. You're in a tough age, because baby has so many more important things to do and learn than change some diaper!!!! I also point out how nice and fresh the new diaper feels. I dunno, so far, so good. Good luck! This is a common issue!

I have the same trouble with my 18 month old and also with my 4 yo when she was this age. I dread it when she has a stinky one.

Although it does not work everytime, it helps to have a distraction. A flashlight, measuring cup, spatula, anything that they could play with for a few minutes other than their typical toy.

My now 17mos. old doesn't give me to much troubl I just give her a couple raspberry's on her belly before we start hand her atoy and she's good. Now my ds was a different story. If he was just wet. I would buy the diapers with the sticky tabs not the velcro and he could stand up I would stick the tabs to his waist pull it up through the center and then attach each tab one by one. This worked for him and because it was only a few times e would have to lay down for the poopy ones he was fine with it.
