My dad got a new job...babysitting!

Ask:
I just had to share this after my dad just called me! He is in his early 60s and a disabled Army veteran. He lives about half an hour away from me & my bro and made quick friends w/ a family down the street from him when he moved.

She's a single mom, about my age, with boys about 8, 6, and 4. Last summer Dad would go with her when she had to take the boys to baseball practice b/c they weren't on the same teams and often had practice at different locations and he'd stay w/ one while she took the other one. He loved it, baseball is his fave and he coached and umpired up until the last couple years, and it made her feel better to not just drop her son off and leave him.

I guess her babysitter moved away and she had a hard time finding anyone else to help out the hours she needed because she manages a local restaurant and has to open it at 6 am 3 days a week. So dad offered to help out for a couple weeks w/ the boys, and after the last couple weeks, told her, don't worry about finding a sitter, I'll just keep doing it! So on Monday, Wed, and Fridays she drops the kids off at 5 am and he puts them back to bed, then gets the two older ones up and gets them breakfast and on the bus to school. Then gets the little one up and has breakfast and they play and whatever until lunch then after lunch he gets on the bus to go to preschool (no preschool buses around here, I thought that was different!). Then they all get off the bus together at his house and are there for about an hour until their mom picks them up.

He is just loving it, he gets along w/ them so well, and I know it's so good for him to have something to do! And the mom is such a sweet girl, she takes good care of my dad, she makes sure he has a good meal w/ veggies and fruit and what he needs any day she's working. She knows he will fix meat and potatoes for himself, but "just doesn't bother w/ veggies or fruit" as he says! So it's nice to have someone else watching out for him and taking care of him!

Thanks for reading all that, I just had to share, it was so funny to hear my dad telling me all about it, he's so excited about it! And I'd never have guessed he'd get a part-time job, let alone babysitting!

Fantastic!!! I believe it is so important to still feel needed when a person retires. Now your Dad has a reason to get up and keep busy!!! But still have some time off. This sounds like a great arrangement PLUS it gives these boys a positive male influence since they live with a single mom.
