What can I do?

Ask:
I'm a sahm with a dh that works regular overtime hours. He's home at 6 every night, and works every saturday. So here's the thing. My ds starts preschool in the fall at a private school, which means tuition starts. WE really need more money coming in so we are'nt just breaking even every month. What if something happens, or just want to go on a weekend vacation? But what job can I do? We don't have neighborhood kids to watch. I am not crafty, I don't have a big group of friends to sell avon or tastefully simple or anything, besdides they are not really into any of that. Dilema!!
Answer:

Part time job somewhere? Temp agency work?

We have two family members that took jobs at UPS, part time (evenings during the week), to help pay for their kids college. One of the main reasons they did it was that UPS has some sort of fund that they put money into for your child's education up to $10K or something. I honestly don't know the details but they're loading trucks for UPS and say it's pretty good for a part time job.

Answer:

Three years ago I took a CNA (Certified Nurses Assistant) course, and now I am able to work the oddest hours, whenever I want, and make good amount of money doing so. I work weekends when DH is home, or 11pm-7am while everyone is asleep. I make more working these shifts, and I only do it once or twice a week and I am able to pay our mortgage.

Because your DH isnt home until 6 it is tricky to find a normal job that starts at that time. However, if you had someone to watch the kids from say 2 or 3 in the afternoon until dh got home it wouldnt cost you much and you could get a simple part time job in sales or something similar.
Answer:

Is there ANYONE that can watch your kiddo for a few hours a day so you can work pt??? WE have it worked out here that MIL watches my kids for free 1 day a week, so I can work, and my mom will usually volunteer to watch them the other times I want to pick up hours.

Dh's cousin was telling us not that long ago that she wanted to take a course for a CNA. I guess the course is paid by the nursing home she wants to work (is that typical?)...she's in her late 30's and has three kids. I think she would be great at it, I hope it works for her.
Answer:

Here in CT, you take the CNA course through a 'back to work' program. If you can't afford it, they give you financial aide, and pay for 2 uniforms. Its a 2 week course. The home I work in used to have a class years ago, but they decided it wasn't cost effective, people take the course and leave. So now they just hire the people out of school with sign on inscentives.

Yep, it is typical for the nursing homes to pay for it!! I work on call at the local nursing home and I get to choose my hours. Most nursing homes have an abundance of open hours to choose from. This week, I am working 4 hours on Wednesday evening and 8 hours on Sunday morning. There are also temp agencies that deal only with nurses and cna's. I think they pay more, but you probably have to travel more. I only work for one nursing home that is a couple of minutes from my house.

Here in Ohio, at least in the town I live in, there are 6 nursing homes. Each one sends the people they hire who are not state tested CNA's, or have not completed their training, to the local vocational school for a 3 week course. The nursing home pays for the course, and pays for the cost of the test and gas reimbursement for the employee to take the state test. Not everyone passes on the first try, so most of the nursing homes here will pay for the employee to take it 3 times. After that, the cost of the test, I believe $75.00 (don't quote me on that) is the employee's responsibility. It is a really nice chance for single mom's to get a break and get on their feet.
Answer:

Have you checked out the school to see if there is a scholarship program? Our preschool has that. Also, one mom cleans the preschool every Friday to pay her DS's tuition. Might be worth looking into.
Answer:

I think the most perfect job for mom's is to work at one of the schools in your area. You have all the same hours and days and the kids do. You get summers and holidays off to be with them. Granted, you aren't going to get rich working there, but I'm sure it would be enough money to cover the preschool tuition.
