Tacoma Ranch????

Ask:
I just have to know! Do you have the white stuff????? You know~~snow!!!! My mom sent me an email from a camera in Jackson Hole and they have SNOW!!! I am so totally jealous. If I were rich, I would hope on my private jet and go play in it. I now know for sure where I want to move to.
Answer:

If you want to move to Jackson Hole, you'd have to be a millionaire. As a matter of fact, the saying around there is the billionaires are pricing the millionaires out. We live in western Idaho and travel through Jackson a lot to points east.

That said, south-eastern Idaho is very close to Jackson to the east, Yellowstone to the north and conveniently located to Salt Lake to the south. It is far cheaper to live in SE Idaho that any of those other locals - as long as you don't mind driving a distance to get anywhere - !

A lot of snow? No, I wouldn't say so - just enough to have fun. Driving around town is still easy, though. We rarely have 'snow days' at school - you know, where the school has to close. But my DD took ski lessons this winter. The ski area is only about 20 - 30 minutes from downtown.

Our weather here is very dry. Snow is kind of fun. It isn't that chill-you-to-the-bone cold like on the more humid east coast. Summers are hot, but again, because of the low humidity they aren't unbearable. You should visit.

Hi Julie,

Do we have white stuff??? OMG, it started sometime last evening and the entire valley floor was covered with about a foot this morning. The mountains are really getting it right now and utah mountian ranges are getting hammered.

It is expected to keep up again this evening and then hopefully get warm again on Monday. It has begun to melt off but the wind is up and when the sun sets we will get covered again.

Yes, my friend, we have snow on May 4. Once it snowed on July 4th! It is never summer in Star Valley Wyoming. We are 1.5 hours from Jackson and that is the closest stop light and stores but all they have is Kmart, staples and a dollar store. They have Smith's and Albertson's and then a nice little private organic market. My Church is in Jackson but it is such a long way to travel with fuel at $3.00.

Does anyone else have snow this morning??

April,
Thanks for you description~~it sounds absolutely wonderful and beautiful!! Do you have a little extra room on your ranch??? I could live in here. Just kidding!! However, I might would do it if there was no summer.
Answer:

Julie,
We always need help on the ranch and provide housing. In the winter which is very long we snowboard each weekend and also take days off for powder days. I love to storm ride in the trees as the snow just piles up and you can see in the trees. I have 3 boards, an Arbor, a Never summer Infinity and a Burton feelgood. I think DH has 3 boards also and two pairs of skis, DS has 1 board and 1 pair of skis because he is only 4. We also have 4 sled aka snowmachines for going into the back country when we can't find the snow we want at the resorts. We gear up with avalance standards, Peeps, probe and shovel all in a backpack and off we go into the mountains to find virgin snow.

I do love and when we come home we have a warm swim spa to make all the hurt go away.

This year I entered my first races...at 48! I entered boarder X at Grand Targhee and Dick's Ditch and Jackson.

So why do you love winter so much? What do you love about snow? Do you ride or ski? Do you come out here ever? You always have a bed in our home! We have extra gear for you to use. I also use to give snowboard lessons to beginners so I can teach you to ride.

I love winter also but it is sooo cold here. When I hit the moose it was -35 and had been for days. It stays that way for anyone. It is brutal just to go out and feed in the mornings. But when it gets above zero it seems warm.

We live out from Jackson where working people can still afford to live and most work in Jackson and drive the 65 miles each way Mon thru Fri. Lucky for us DH works for the school district here in the valley.

What was the website your mom sent to you? The top of teton pass camera or the JHMR camera?

Have a snowy dream, April
Answer:

April,
I wish I could figure out why I love the snow and cold weather so much. When I was younger we would get lots of snow. I then went to college at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. It is located in the mountains. We got tons of snow and my dh (then boyfriend) and I would go riding on the parkway to see the views. Everything is just sooooo much prettier in the snow. It is also more peaceful. We also travel to Mt. Mitchell (also located in NC) just to be around more snow and colder temps. We have also passed the love of winter on to our children.

No, I have never been out your way, but hope and pray to be able to one day. I have seriously been considering moving out that way because of the weather. It just gets sooooooo hot and soooooooo humid here. It seems like we no longer have definate seasons. It is either hot, hotter, hottest, or a little less hot. My dh and I have lived in this area our whole lives as have our family members. I never even have to make a long distance phone call to speak to a family member. So I guess deep in my heart, I know we will probably live around this area the rest of our lives. However, I really need to start making travel plans at least to enjoy Wyoming and other states.

Do I participate in snow sports? No. I would probably be mistaken for a moose on skis if I did so. I am also not that graceful. Hopefully my kids will learn how to ski one day. My dd would love to learn how to snowboard.

I can remember days in college when we had 2 feet of snow on the ground and the temps were extremely cold with the wind factor~~way below zero. The campus announced for us not to leave our dorms, but guess who thought she needed to go out in it? Yes, you guessed it, ME!!! I was physically blown backwards by the wind. I could not even get up the hill in front of my dorm. Needless to say, my roommate insisted we return to our room and I listened.

Oh, BTW, the website my Mom always forwards is the Teton pass Camera and another one (not sure of the name).

Hopefully those snowy dreams will happen.

Julie,

The teton pass camera is a fav out here also. At the parking area people get out and go up to hike glory bowl. It is a back country access and very popular here as it is free and wide open. Locals have stickers that say "Ski 22" which is hwy 22, teton pass. TP is only road over the mountain range from Jackson to Victor and Driggs, Idaho. We take snake river canyon because we live S. of Jackson not west. It is nice in the beginning of winter to see everyone hiking. You have to be in shape and I am not!

It does sound like you love winter! It does have fond memories for us also. Now, we do get tired of plowing snow and the cold but we wouldn't change it for the world.

You are more than welcome to visit out here anytime. Again, help on the ranch is always good and free help even better. I have a few horses that need work for the summer and then we can all play in the snow during the winter.

By taking winter holidays you can always return home with good stories of white fluffy stuff. I will try to find some good pictures to send your way.

Hope your dreams are white.

Cookie knows all about snow as she is just a the next state over. It really gets cold where she lives!
