How do I start a container garden?

Ask:
I live in an apartment so the only gardening I can do is container gardening. I'd like to grow some of my own veggies/herbs to save money... does anyone know how to start one of these? Please be specific because I've never gardened at all and could kill a cactus believe me lol so I need all the tips/care.

TIA

I would be interested in this, as well.

I would prefer to give you advice with things I have tried, but never having grown a containter garden ~ I don't have any. I can, however, refer you to a book...

I have read Veggie Gardening for Dummies and LOVE IT. It is a very easy read, and gave me so much information that I never would have thought of. I would imagine this would be just as helpful. I would see if you can check it out from your local library first ~ or some of the excerpts from the Amazon page. (I tend to be a big fan of the "Dummies" books )

I have several containers that I plant flowers and grow veggies in. I went on the advice of the green house owner that I buy my seedlings and plants from... he told me to make sure the container has a layer of rocks at the bottom, top it off with good soil. Keep it fertilized and watered just as you would an in ground garden. My containers have always done well with this method.
Good luck.

It really depends on what u are goin to grow. tomatoes need larger containers, peppers an go in 1-3 gallon containers. I am currently putting my tomatoes and peppers in containers. I actually have my tomatoes too close but I think they will be ok. I don't need 10extra large plants. I suggest a visit to the library. u should also mulch b/c u get more water loss in containers.

I grow tomatoes in hay bales. Go to your local nursery and buy 2 tomato plants. They may have the hay as well. Keep the twine wrapped around your bales and take a sharp knife and cut an "X" into the hay where you want to place your plants. Usually I put 2 plants in one bale of hay. You do not need to add extra dirt. Remove the plants from their pots and whatever remaining dirt and stuff into the hay. Water them really good. Then to keep bugs away, plant 3 marigold plants by your tomato plants (bugs hate the way they smell)

This is a fun, unique way to grow tomatoes and we have success every time!

I've gone through a lot of plants as I have learned some of the tricks. The two best tricks I have picked up are: 1) figure out the average temperature and amount of direct sunlight the plant will get in the chosen spot, and 2) find a garden store that has patient and knowledgeable staff who will listen to your many questions. I was really shy about asking a lot of questions early on but killed almost everything as a result. I know ask a million questions about how big plants will get, what size container they need, how much water, how dry can they get, etc.

I also stick with plants that can tolerate drying out since I forget to keep up with my watering :-)

I wouldn't call myself a gardener, by any means but I have planted some veggies with much success. A couple of years ago I didn't feel like digging and weeding and all that so I used containers. I got about 10 pretty big pots- the cheapest ones I could find that were big. I planted tomatoes and peppers. All I did was bought enough cheap soil to fill up the pots and some of the Miracle grow fertilizer for veggies. I planted the plants and watered when I remembered to and fertilized whenever. I had more tomatoes than I could ever eat or give away. I had all different kinds of peppers and I wanted to experiment with putting them close together to see if they would 'cross breed' I had no idea what I was doing but I had some of the hottest bell peppers ever. Some peppers I left on the plant forever just to see what the actual final color was and even those came out great.

I guess what I'm getting at is I think some veggies are just really hard to not make work. Give it a try; I think you'll do great!
