Ask:
Okay Ladies......I need some assistance.
I really really want to paint my room red. Do kind of a red and black theme. My question is this.......My baseboards and doors are all white. So.....do i leave them white or paint them a different color?
Do y'all think that red and black would be too "scary" looking. I don't want to have nightmares. . I just really need a change and I love red. Any opinions on how to decorate a red room?
Answer:
what about red and a yellowish gold instead of black? the white would go good, but if you use 2 dark colors it will make the room darker over all.
Answer:
One of the many houses I lived in when i was the wife of a travelling AirForce sargeant had a room that was painted red with black baseboards and trim. I thought it was strange but it was the only room I wasn't wiping doorjams down daily to get rid of handprints. It was dark but I got used to it - I would have liked a different color but I hate painting so I left it.
Answer:
I like the idea of red but I would be worried about the room being too dark. Maybe try one wall red, and the other ones maybe a cream color. I have a friend that did this in their bedroom & it looked really nice.

First, red is the color that creates the most energy. If you're still wanting to move forward, then I say go ahead! It's just paint right? If you don't like it, paint it back. I used to be so oblivious to painting rules and stuff until I started watching Get Color on HGTV. Jane (the host) is always talking about how there is this myth that dark colors make a room look smaller. That isn't so -- it's CONTRAST that makes it look smaller, because your eyes are bouncing around so quickly. I'd say instead of using the black with the red, use brown. They are adjacent on the color wheel, so there is an expansive feel, not a (contrasting) shrinking feel. Also, I'd soften the white with an ivory at least -- something that's not as stark against the red. You can put black in, but I'd mix it in with the accessories -- black/brown is necessary to ground a room and balance it with the other colors in there. (the ivory balances all the colors as well). Make sure to use fabrics (even if it's just for pillows) that incorporate tones of ALL the colors you use, which will tie it all together as a true theme, not just a bunch of random colors stuck everywhere. Do you have a light colored carpet or wood floor? Paint the ceiling a light tone of the brown, a color that is light enough to draw your eye upward and create a sense of height. If your ceiling is white, you'll want to do soemthing to blend it in - having red walls bump against a white ceiling will make the ceiling feel like it's only a foot above the floor and super shrink the room -- that's the contrast happening again. If you need other ideas, check out HGTV.com/getcolor. She has a lot of articles on how to use colors and has color wheels to work with, etc. Oh, and if you paint, remember to add a little bit of vanilla to the paint before starting to eliminate the icky smell. Here's a link with some great painting tips and tricks -- good stuff:

Well I don't know how to post pictures or I would post my "red room". The color red I used is like a deep blood red. Definately keep the baseboard white, I painted the bottom half of the room red and the top is white. I LOVE it, it's our living room and I definately don't feel energized in there, I am very comfy. It is sort of romantic. I think if you had the room painted red and you had wall hangings with black frames and black accents it would look very classy. My one tip though. Be sure to use a grey primer first. oy, I learned that lesson the hard way and it took 6 coats to get the color I wanted. And of course if you didn't like it, just repaint it! Good luck!!

Thank you thank you thank you all!
I am going to start talking to DH about it now. (not that it is really up to him lol) I will keep you posted as to when i start and put up pictures!
Answer:
I love red...my sister has a beautiful red living room, it's kinda cranberry red with white trim. I personally wouldn't do black trim, that just sounds scary to me. But that's me. Use tinted primer.
Answer:
We have a red dining room and it is red red. I think the name of the paint was china red. We kept the baseboards, trim and ceiling white and I couldn't be more pleased with it. Our dining room gets a whole lot of natural light, so it does not seem gloomy or dark at all. Does your bedroom get a lot of natural light? That would be my only concern with going with such a dark color. Or you could do what others suggested and paint one or two walls red and leave the others white or something neutral. I think (and is only my opinion) but red walls with black trim might just be too much, too much bang. But who knows, you might want that in your bedroom.
Answer:
I personally think the white accents on baseboards, etc., with a scarlett, rich red would be beautiful, as long as the room isn't really small.
I would love to see pictures when you are done! It's such a bold choice but could be really beautiful.
