Aghh!! Teething!!

Ask:
Hi Ladies,

Oh my am I miserable. Ds is teething in a seemingly painful kind of way... he is almost 7 months now and is working on his first tooth (by the sound of it, he's getting a whole mouthful at the same time...)

Last night I was up with him for 1.5 hours - and he screamed (sorry, SCREAMED) for 45 minutes straight - nothing would calm him down. Finally I gave him some baby tylenol and 15 minutes later he calmed down, and 30 minutes later went to sleep.

I'm so miserable this morning!! He is of course just fine and woke up at the usual time like nothing happened.

... Give us some tips for surviving teething!!! He never even did this when he was a little gassy in the first 3 months (and certainly not in the middle of the night).
Answer:

Hylands makes some all natural teething tablets. They've worked really well for both of my children. You disolve 2-3 small tablets in some water (I like to use a medicator pacifier), and give them to baby up to 4 times a day.

My dd is teething pretty badly atm, and we are using the tablets, tylenol and orajel pm when it gets really horrible. its all seeming to work. She's not crazy about teethers yet.

Good luck. If you need any advice about teethers or where to get tablets, medicator paci's, whatever, PM me. We've used everything!

Oh, it is hard! The first ones are the worst! After that it is like they get used to having pain/discomfort and just get cranky.

Hyland's tablets are fast acting, baby seems to like the taste, but they do wear off fairly quickly. BUT, they are good at keeping baby calmer until Tylenol or Ibuprofen kicks in. I do Tylenol, but Ibuprofen at night - you can also stagger the two. Ibuprofen works six to eight hours, whereas Tylenol only for four. Ibuprofen is for inflammation, which is what those little gums and jaws have. When it's really bad you can put on some Orajel, but don't overdo it because it can numb up the swallowing reflex, and baby already has extra drool there. When ds was a baby, he would scream. Nothing OTC worked. I had to get a prescription that the 20% benzocaine in it - the OTC ones have 5-10% max. His Dr. really resisted me until I told him the persistent symptoms. I'm glad I persisted because we found out later he has a sensory disorder; the little guy felt pain more than the average child did - he still does. With dd, everything OTC works just fine. Is she normal? Who knows - she has a wicked temper. Also, cold/frozen washcloths seem to be a favorite. I would also ice my finger and press down on the sore part - it seemed to help sometimes.

I am not a big fan of taking/ giving meds. I did use the Hyland teething tablets they dissolve quickly right in babys mouth, before bed when she really beeded it! But I think taking a small baby wash cloth run it under water and ring it out leave it in the ring out shape and put it in the freezer. That was my babies favorite teething relief, do a few cause they thaw out quick. We hated the orajel, we used just a little and it numbed her to where she couldn't suck her binky to well and it really pi$$ed her off!

Thanks for the ideas. I'll have to ask my doctor (appt. Thurs.) what is available here in Germany because I don't know if they have these teething tablets. I have some gel for his gums but that didn't do anything at all last night. ice water and tylenol seemed to do the trick but it was a long struggle.

I didn't know they made baby ibuprofen - i'll have to check that out as well. Knowing Germans, they probably just recommend a tea and maybe some strange homeopathic stuff; they're always into non-medical cures. So I will quiz my doctor on what's available and see if I can find these teething tablets here.

I've tried the frozen washcloth but he isn't interested in it. I have a teething ring I put in the freezer and that helps during the day, but it also didn't help at night. I think he was probably mostly upset that he couldn't sleep and just got hysterical, I don't know. I just hope it doesn't happen again tonight!!!

Wish us all sweet dreams....

Yep, Hylands are the best! I used them with both kiddos and they worked really well. If you don't have them accessible to you, try going to a health food store and see what alternatives they have. Here is a link to Hyland's website and it gives what the different ingredients are, mabye if they don't have the actual pills you can get some pastilles and try and duplicate them yourself, definitely worth a try!
