Organic yogurt question:

Ask:
I opened my container of Stonyfield organic yogurt this morning and this is what was written on the top foil liner: Our delicious, fat free, 32oz yogurts will soon be certified organic again! (The interruption was caused by an organic milk shortage.)

Can the container say organic if it's not certified organic? I have no idea about the rules on what the FDA considers things to be organic, I just thought it odd.
Answer:

I haven't seen anything like that on my yogurt. I usually buy Brown Cow (which btw is so good, it should be sinful!). I do know that there have been organic milk shortages and that the prices of organic milk have become outrageous!

I don't believe it should be able to claim organic if it's not, but since the foil had something on it about it not being organic, that might be ok. It's probably really expensive for them to print up special containers, since the containers are probably printed way in advance.
Answer:

Was it written on the foil on the outside so you can see it thru the plastic top, or was it concealed and you didnt see it until it was opened? I could see them not changing the actual plastic containers, but if they concealed that it is not organic, then you should be able to get your money back. Or there should be a sign at the store where the yogurt is located that it is not organic...right now.
Answer:

That statement was printed on the foil, under a cream colored lid, no way of reading that unless you actually took off the plastic lid in the store, which I would never think of having to do! The container itself says Stonyfield Farm, ORGANIC is written underneath that. I just read the back of the container and it has the circle with USDA/organic in it. I just don't know what it would say if it was certified organic, I thought the USDA circle symbol meant that. But I don't know as I don't normally buy too many organic things, other than cereal and soy milk. How does an organic milk shortage occur?

I've never heard of Brown Cow brand, I'll have to check for it the next time I'm grocery shopping! It may just because the container says organic, but I thought the brand I bought, which is vanilla, tastes better than the Dannon regular vanilla.
