Freezing milk???

Ask:
Does anyone freeze milk to save money?? I have never done this and I am not sure how good it is once it is defrosted, especially since it will be after the expiration date. I am just trying to figure out how to save money on milk when it is on sale. I would appreciate any tips. Thanks!
Answer:

I do freeze milk. It expands so don't be alarmed. Some people open it and drain some out first. But I don't like opening it, just me. It takes a few days to thaw though. I shake mine up and it tastes the same.
Answer:

Absolutely! Milk freezes just fine. In fact, I just took one gallon out of my freezer a few days ago. (I bought 3 gallons while it was on sale, for $2.18/gal.) It will turn yellow, and expand, as mommy&wifeisme said. But don't worry, it turns white again after it thaws out. I leave mine out on the counter all day, in the dish drainer, and gently turn it around every once in a while to sort of "mix" it. (Don't SHAKE it though, this will cause tiny pieces of ice to distribute around in the milk, and is a pain to have to strain out!) As for the expiration dates, every gallon of milk I've ever frozen, and then thawed out, tasted just as it would have if I'd opened it on the day I froze it. I always write the date that I freeze it on the outside of the bottle. That way I know how many days its' good for once I do thaw it out.

Freezing saves SO much money on milk when you can buy it on sale!
Before buying the milk mentioned above, the last gallon I bought was nearly $3.00!
So, I stocked up while I could at $2.18!!

My grandparents did this for years. I could tell the difference, it just tasted a little odd to me. You may want to try a half gallon first and see if you like the taste.

How many days is the milk good for once it is completely defrosted?? Thank you so much for your help!
Answer:

I've never frozen it before but I have add an 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt to a gallon of milk when it is the date it expires is when I open it. It makes it last longer and we use it withut it going bad.

Can you taste the salt?? I have a hard time drinking milk on the day it expires let alone days after. It is just me, I am sure it tastes alright. What does the salk to exactly??
Answer:

My recommendation to save money on milk is to purchase dehydrated milk powder and mix it 50/50 with your store bought milk. Different powdered milks taste different (Carnation isn't the best tasting but Morning Moo is pretty good) so definately shop around. You can get all sorts of kinds of dehydrated milk: non-fat, low fat and even whole milk.

If I freeze milk, say, on 5/1 and the date on the bottle says it's good until at least 5/5, I know that milk still has about 4 days of freshness left in it. I would write 5/1 on the bottle, then write "4" and circle it. Then, when I defrost it, I know it'll be good for at least 4-5 days. Sometimes I will count ahead how ever many days it should still be good for, and I just write the "new exp. date" on there. I always smell it first, though, just to be sure, but it doesn't taste any different to me having been frozen! I sometimes make buttermilk with milk that is starting to go bad, then make biscuits or pancakes or something. Just add a Tbls. vinegar or lemon juice per 1 cup of milk.
