Ask:
I just read that these are making a comeback- better for the earth and for the baby. The plastic kind can leach chemicals that are harmful. But still- for a one baby household, that seems doable- but can you imagine trying to keep a toddler (or two) away from glass bottles? Still, that was all they had way back when- along with only cloth diapers, so of course it can be done.
I also read plastic toys can leave chemical residues. It's too late for my kids. They've already sucked on every plastic toy and ring available. But if I had another- that child would have to live with cloth diapers and wooden only toys.
The more I read and try to "go green", the more I am dismayed about how many chemicals I've already been exposed to. Next area to work on... organic deodorant.
Answer:
I would love to "go green" but sometimes it costs a lot of green to do it
There are also simple things that we can all do to help the environment. I was just talking to my mom about how economical cloth diapers are. there are so many ways that people could save money and help the environment.
PS Baking soda= organic deoderant
Answer:
There is no way I could ever have used glass bottles!! They would have been broken so fast!!! I am all for being environmentally friendly, but that is too extreme for me!
Answer:
glass bottles seem so dangerous! lol
apparently, i was weaned from the bottle when i hit my mama upside the head with a glass baby bottle as she was driving,,, the bottle went out the window and i understand they told me a 'dog got it' so i couldn't have it anymore *has lil' to do with the topic, but just my 'experience' with glass bottles,,, i was GLAD my kids didn't have those,, my 3rd whacked my older kids often with hers *she always HAS been mean!!* lol
Answer:
I use glass bottles, but then again my son only uses a bottle once in a blue moon.. He is all breast fed, and I hope to never really get him attached to a bottle.. I have three in our home, that is it..
As for the organic deodorant,, try this, I love it!!! And its safe to use, no aluminum in it, and last for a year, I think I paid 5.99 for it at our healthstore, and it will last me a year. Crystal Stick
As for diapers.. I use cloth on my son... we use Fuzzi Bunz or Swaddlebees, and you can make your own if you are a good sewer.. I buy my cloth dipes used, and when I am done I clean them up and resale them..
Toys ugh I wish I knew what I know now about toys, plastics... I have soo many toys that it would really hard for me to get rid of all the plastic ones he has, but I just make sure he does not suck on to many of them... or knaw on them and break plastic pieces off to eat... ..
Going green can be expensive, but saves in the long run, your lives are healthier, and you have less visits to the MD.. I dont think the glass bottles are any less dangerous... I dont mind sitting with my son while he eats his, when he gets one... But like I said he gets one maybe once a week... He is spoiled,, cloth on his bum, mommas milk in his tum, and sleeps with mom and dad

I'm right up there with you. I just purchased from the internet some Kleen Kanteen sports bottles in 12 oz. (small) sizes for ds. They are stainless steel inside And outside and are supposed to be better than plastic. Plus we don't buy bottled water anymore. I even got one for myself but they are expensive and I had to wait months for them. Three cost me $50 but if it can save us from harmful chemicals then that's what we will do. I also looked into the glass baby bottles when ds was a baby but I knew my dh would kill me if I bought yet again a different style of bottle - we tried playtex and didn't like those liner things - then Avent which I liked but were the awful plastic. By the time I found glass ones ds was 1 and gave up the bottle on his own.
I am going 'greener' by the day. I not only feel better doing it, I find that since the stuff is more expensive I really use only enough to get the job done and it almost lasts as long. Same with food. It is a lot more expensive but I dole it out more carefully now so in the long run I'm not paying that much more for it!
Oh it would be so NICE to have a green section. I wish Kim would reconsider. It seems like the 'shopping' section has sooo many cross-overs of things that can be combined.

It is so disturbing to realize how many chemicals we are exposed to CONSTANTLY. I recently read about the glass bottles, but with ceramic tile in our house we couldn't do it! I breastfeed for the first year, but I wean them to bottles at a year (they hate the hard plastic of sippee cups.) It kills me to think of that plastic leaching....
And what about sippee cups? They aren't any better - they're plastic too!
I read an article recently that told how many chemicals were found in the blood of babies *in utero*!!! It was something extremely high, like 250! And that was just the chemicals that the researchers were testing for, so you know it was higher than that. And I've read in several articles that jet fuel is present in every woman's breast milk, whether she is in the U.S. or even some remote, isolated country. It's everywhere.
Don't get me started on the decimation of our wild salmon... it is predicted we will one day have no "safe" wild fish to eat. And our family WON'T eat farm raised fish....
It is scary. We are polluting ourselves to death, yet everyone wonders why we have such a rise in cancers, allergies, etc... Our world is toxic!
I have been trying to do some things to "go greener".
~ I have stopped using all lotions. After washing my face at night or getting out the shower each morning, I dab a little olive oil or coconut oil ((organic)) on the spots that get really dry. Like, under my eyes, my cheeks, my elbows, my calves...
~ I have stopped using deodorant. It has been a couple months now. I live in Arizona and would never have thought I could go without deodorant/antiperspirant! But, it has not been bad and no one has complained hahahaha. If I get sweaty, I just freshen with a damp washcloth.
~ I have been experimenting with using shampoo alternatives. There are so many chemicals in shampoo, it's awful!
~ I have recently learned there is formaldehyde in nail polish. I will not be using my polish any more. There are a couple brands that are safe -- one is by Revlon. I may pick some up if I feel my toes need some color!
~ I have been using cloth diapers on my baby more often. Just the thought that his precious "parts" are wrapped in chemicals for about 3 YEARS kills me! The only time he's out of a diaper is for bath time or pool time etc.. my big fear is that 15 years from now they will discover that the rise in male infertility/low sperm count is due to all the chemicals we put on their boy parts.... cloth are harder, but I have to keep my priorities straight.
~ I have stopped using foundation. I am trying to go "lighter" with just a little loose powder, blush, lipstick and mascara. It feels better!
~ I am using fewer household chemicals. I clean my kitchen with vinegar. I still use comet on the toilets, but I'm trying not to clean as often (I usually clean the bathrooms every day or every other day) because I am pregnant and don't want exposure to so many chemicals. I need to start cleaning toilets with vinegar or baking soda... just haven't switched yet. I think it's a mental thing (I feel the toilets need to be DOUSED with chemicals to get them clean.... I need to change my thinking I guess.)
~ I have gotten rid of my Teflon-coated pans. I use stainless steel now. It took some adjusting (some things tend to stick and it drives me bonkers...) but I have been learning how to lessen the sticking!
~ I am using more cloths in the kitchen instead of paper towels.
~ We changed all of our lightbulbs to the energy-efficient ones.
~ One final thing: I haven't bought my kids Chicken Nuggets from McDonalds since reading WHAT was in them!!!! OMG!!!! Nasty.
So, some of those things are to "go green", some are to avoid chemicals. Sorry so long!
