Advice on building a credit

Ask:
DH and I are careful about this one because I never had any credit on my name except for one credit card which we are paying for on time ($500 ) and a furniture (alloted our payments every month ($300) .All our debts are under his name. When DH and I got married his credit score was really really low but yet we manage to get a van with 12% interest rate. Our plan is once DH and I retire we would buy a home but until then we are working on building my credit score. He's not trying to ruin mine because we are going to need it when we buy a house. Since we move constantly (being in the army and all) we are thinking about just renting an apartment. Then he was also thinking that we should get a house now and have people rent it. I'm very skeptical about this one because I don't like the idea people renting it and I don't like getting one now since my credit is not "build" up yet. I'm trying to educate myself on this as much as I can. What do you think guys?
Answer:

I think that if you can, buy ASAP. My inlaws never bought or saved anything and now that they are retiring, it is kind of sad to see they dont qualify for much. they will either have to continue renting at 5% increase per year or buy something where the payment will stay fixed once their income is fixed. most folks in their age bracket would have had their first homes paid off by now. they are extremely regretful about not buying something earlier.
