Ask:
So i am thinking of asking around the neighborhood if anyone needs summer care for their children. We are having a neighborhood cook out this weekend so it would be a good time. I think it would be convenient for the neighbors and help bring in some cash for my family. I have worked in Daycare in the past both here and in Japan, so I do have experience. How should I go about telling them and what do you think is a fair charge?
Answer:
As far as cost I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. I am in Ohio and charge 6 an hr or 30 a day. ( I gave myself a $1.00 raise recently) of course I called around to see what others charge. Look in your newspaper.
I would casually mention that you are starting a daycare business. Up sell yourself by telling the moms you can watch them for them to have a moms day out or something along those lines. Many of them may already be set for summer but you never know. Good luck
Answer:
would you charge the same for a child in diapers as one who is school aged?
Answer:
My daycare provider charged the same for all ages, but it was waay lower than Momof2boys!!!! Call around and see what people are charging. Also, in MN if you regualarly care for more than one family you have to be licenced and that is a real hassle. Check out the rules where you are.
Answer:
I charge the same diapers or not. The parents DO supply diapers and wipers!
Happymom, Thats why I say the cost depends on where you live my sil charges 10 per hr. p/t and her weekly rate is 160 pr 170 I cant remember.
Answer:
Normally babies and younger kids cost more. I get $40 flat a day (8-5) per child for toddlers/preschoolers and I don't watch any more babies. You could set up hourly or daily rates. I'm in Northern Va and that is a good price. Where in MD are you? If you are in an expensive area like VA is you can charge the same or a little more. Cost really depends where you live, you can check the baltimore craigslist childcare section for average pricing.
I think the get together would be a great way to start, simply mention that you are taking on a child or two for the summer and if they know of anyone needing care. TONS of people are looking for summer care right now, you can also advertise on the baltimore craigslist for free if you didn't already know that. Good Luck! oh and if you have more than 6 children in your house (including yours) you HAVE to be licensed, so I would only take one or two to be easy on you!
Answer:
In my area i charge $40/day for newborn-2 years old....2 and up are $33/day.
I agree call around and get a couple of quotes from daycare providers in your area. Don't do it for too little....you will hate not getting paid fairly.
Answer:
You all are making pretty good money!! I am in KY and I get $20 a day, and had to squeeze that out of them!

isn't that the truth!
Answer:
In MD you can be fined if you are not licensed. Licensed care is about $75 a week, unlicensed $60 a week (for homecare). The daycare centers charge even more.
