To keep animals away

Ask:
I just read in First magazine a useful tip for gardening. To keep deer and other animals that nibble your plants out of the garden, use a veggie peeler to slice pieces from a bar of soap and scatter them around the garden. The animals don't like the smell and will stay away.

Hope this helps someone!

great tip! thanks!
Answer:

I'll have to let my mother know - this is a major issue of hers!
Answer:

I have heard a couple of others as well. My mom is a beautician and people ask for hair clippings all the time to spread around the edge of their gardens to keep critters away. I have also heard you can mix some hot sauce w/ water and spray it on your plants. The animals won't want anything to do with them (at least not more than once).
Answer:

My brother has used the hair clippings around his corn patch and it worked to keep the deer away! He just puts a bit of hair into a piece of old stocking and ties it to a fence post around the garden.
