Ask:
My son has just been diagnosed with ADHD. The councilor at school has suggested that I find some structured things for him to do over the summer to work on his social skills. We've tried sports and it is painful to watch. He just isn't a sports, "team minded" child and from what we've experienced, there really isn't that much time to socialize in these situations anyway. So, here are some things he really likes and some ideas I have. I would love some new ideas or input from you.
He loves to just go to the park and make friends and play.
He adores animals.
Bike riding.
I have thought of starting him in Sunday school at the little church around the corner. They have a summer bible camp that lasts for a week.
We're planning some summer fun family things, but I don't know if that would be concidered structured. (zoo, camping, museums, hiking).
I don't want to tie up every minute of the summer because I think it's important to just be free to play and hang out with his little brother too. Can you help me with this
Answer:
Does your area have a summer rec program? Those are fun for kids and are not structured like sports are. Can he volunteer at a local vet to go in and play with the animals or walk them?
Answer:

Yes, there is a summer program. I remember my girlfriend signing her boys up for it last year. I will call and ask her for some more info on it.
There is an animal shelter one town away. I'll be they would appreciate help there.
Great ideas... thanks.

The zoo is about an hour away. My son (and I) would love to work at the zoo!!!! I wish we lived closer...

Just a thought - but how about swimming lessons.

Okay I think my ideas have all already been suggested but I'll list them anyway as an I agree!
Volunteering with an animal shelter would be a great idea. They can always use help and it would be a good experience for him.
The rec center would be good as they usually have a lot of activities going on and he could surely find something he would enjoy.
I think family trips (museum, zoo, etc) would be great. If I come up with anything original I'll post again.
Oh what about getting together with some friends/neighbors his age to do a community project. Pick up trash, or volunteer or something.

It's a really good idea, but my lazy self is dreading the thought. They run EVERYDay for 6 weeks. The thought of doing anything every day in the summer kills me! I know I should be doing this though...
Answer:
Karate! Soccer. They both teach strength, patience and discipline.
