Colic Help

Ask:
This can be moved, I just wanted to get some ideas in one of the higher traffic areas of the board

I know some people say there is no such thing as colic--that it is something else that is wrong and you just have to figure it out. I totally believed this, until this baby was born.

She is almost 5 weeks old and was a great baby as far as crankiness, up until about a week ago. She co-sleeps at night and only wakes up 3 -4 times, which I think is great. She is an angel most of the time.... HOWEVER.

Every night, from about 6-10pm she whines, and screams, and squirms. There is nothing that will make her feel better. Not walking, not swinging, not swaddling, or rocking. I tried putting a bath into her bedtime routine and it did nothing. I have used ALL my baby tricks and nothing is working..

any
tips?

She looks sweet, but don't be fooled!

prettty baby!!

I'd try the mylicon drops *generic version* and with my youngest, she had that period at night of totally unhappy,, and only her daddy walking her around, showing her EVERYTHING helped... he walked around the aquarium, the pictures on the wall, everything, changing the 'scenery' and colors for her and talking about the stuff the whole time,, his voice and the 'looking' seemed to soothe her better than anything else... *and we held her where our hands gave some pressure against her tummy* so like when he was walking,, he had her back against his stomach and his hand pressing her tummy a bit

My first daughter had colic for a while.A friend told me to lay her on her back and gently push her legs up.Bend her legs at the knees like shes squatting. It helped enough for me to get my sanity back.
Answer:

Are you nursing or forumla feeding? A lot of times IRON is the culprit. If you are nursing and taking iron or prenatal vitamins still, quit for a few weeks to see what happens. Otherwise, if you are formula feeding, try a week of low iron formula to see how she does. If she does better, lay off of the high iron for a few weeks..but do try to go back to it eventually. My oldest son was my worst one with colic...and whoever said there is NOT such a thing needs to have a baby who has it! HA!!!
Answer:

My Dr. said that colic peaks at 6 weeks. However, dd's reflux and gas did go on longer. Yes, try to get a bit of tummy exercise before bedtime - bicycling the legs, massage on body, etc. Mylicon...I actually had to have prescription meds for son - it was an anticramping med - only used it for a few weeks, because he had horrible gas.

Do talk w/your dr. if the pain seems really bad and baby's inconsolable.
Answer:

those gas drops do work well. i've used them with both my kids. Singing also worked well for both. Try singing something like Over The Rainbow or What A Wonderful World while you dance with your swaddled baby.
For ds, holding him near a running faucet worked well and dd really enjoyed being swaddled and sucking on a pacifier while being rocked in a glider. Every kid is different and you just have to keep trying until you find out what works.
I do remember the advice nurse said to keep baby in a sitting up postition for at least 30 minutes after she eats to help the gas not build up in her stomach. Also, massaging her tummy worked well and moving her legs around to try to get the gas out helped. Warm baths with some of that calming lavendar and chamomile baby stuff might work as well.
Good luck. This will pass.

Gracie is just beautiful! Quentin had a time when he'd do this at night too. The thing that worked best for him was to sit on one of those big rubber exercise balls & bounce with him on that. Something about that motion worked better than anything else. Good luck.

My niece and my daughter are 3 months apart and when she was born my sister and I actually used to trade babies at night. she would come and take my dd while I took hers because her babys colic was so bad. Anyway I found that Hannahs problem was over stimulation, she just couldnt take it anymore and had to let out some steam. I tried walking her, bouncing and rocking and then one night I had more than I could take and I just went and put her in the crib and shut the door on her. well to my suprise she cried for about 10 minutes and then just laid there. I think that all of the holding and goings on during the day was overwhelming her and by 6 at night she couldnt take it, so she would let it all out. Try just putting her down for awhile when you know it is starting to get that time, see if maybe she just needs to take a break. I also found that Hannah did really good when it was quiet and low lighting. I hope you get through this soon.

I forgot - a couple of things that helped us - yes, bouncing on the exercise ball, kneebends holding baby - up and down motion seems to help bring up gas, and we've not mentioned Gripe Water. There are a few brands out there, but I get the one made by Wellements. You can call your health food store. Bliss carries a brand that BabiesRUs has, but it has either alcohol or something else I didn't care for. Not perfect, but it did seem to help. Chamomile tea, also - 1-2 teaspoons for tummy - safe and it calms them on top of it. You, the parent can drink the rest - you need it! . Straight for baby, no milk or sugar - you can have it any way you want.

Also, swinging gently in arms, too, seems to help move those bubbles.

Also- for my dd, in addition to gas drops, tummy exercises and me modifying my diet a bit, a colic sock worked. . . sometimes. Basically a sock filled with beans that i microwaved 30 sec and then put on her belly (after letting it cool down to a good temp)

I know its no fun. hope it passes soon!!! It will pass, I promise
