Saving on Heathly Food

Ask:
Hi Gang.

Does anyone have any suggestions on saving on food? We eat super health--kids have lots of food issues.

We drink Rice and soy milk. We don't eat anything with additives or preservatives.

I feel pretty good about our diet but it's KILLING us in the money department.

Does anyone have any tricks they can share? Freezing stuff?

Thanks,
Sue
Answer:

Hi, Sue, and welcome! Check out our Special Needs area. There is a sticky - first line there, that talks about how we cheat by sneaking healthy things into our kids' food. Hope that will give you a start! There are lots of entries on this board about saving, including stockpiling and all. You can also use the "search" feature you see in the blue line above to search by topic. Have fun exploring! We even have a Gardening section if that's a way that you like to save!
Answer:

Farmers Markets and roadside stands are great for produce. As for soy milk, it takes months to expire if its not opened yet. When its on sale, stock up! See if you can get cupons from the manufactures to help offset the price as well. If you can combine cupons and in-store sales, you'll do well!

Good luck!

Hi Saversue, We have a dairy/egg/additive/colouring free diet -necessary for my son but the whole family follow it when home. It is more expensive, we save a little by baking and cooking everything from scratch. I'd be happy to share recipes if it might help.

If you have a Trader Joe's market in your area, you should check them out. They specialize in healthy food and their prices are cheaper than most regular markets. For example, their tofu is 99 cents and that is their standard price all the time.
Answer:

For fresh fruits and veggies, check to see if there is a CSA farm nearby. You pay for a share at the beginning of summer and get between 10-60 lbs of produce every week! Also, a lot of companies are more than happy to send out free coupons for their products. I've found that a lot of organic companies will send out 3-4 coupons for $1.50-$2.00 off different items. I recently received a $4.00 coupon from Quaker Oats, just for emailing and leaving a comment. A lot of major grocery stores are coming up with their own organic line of foods. Safeway has O Organics, which is free from dyes and preservatives. And the foods that we've tried have been really good!
