Ask:
We had this same problem this time last year.........
There are what look like gnats all over the place. I think that they are coming up from the kitchen drain, because that is where they spend most of their time. I just don't know how to get rid of them. We have tried pouring boiling water down the drain, and bleach. We tried leaving out sugar water covered with plastic wrap (which catches some, but leaves the rest). But nothing is working to really get rid of them. They are driving me crazy. They fly around while we are trying to eat. They are tiny and horrible and oh so annoying. It hasn't gotten completely out of control like last year (we had to put up new fly paper every night and by morning they would be black), but I am afraid that it might!
Do i need to just give up and call an exterminator???
Any ideas???
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Answer:
Been there! Any kind of annoying insect and I know a little too much about it!
They are laying eggs in the drain because there's a food supply. Pour a little ammonia in and let it sit for a minute and then pour in boiling water. This kills the eggs. Works every time!
Also they usually come in on produce from the store. So if you buy bananas, shake them out!
Answer:
Sounds like "fruit flies". They are hard to get rid of because they only have a 2 week life span but the female can lay something like 300 eggs!!!! Ammonia down the drain should work, also, if you have a rubber stopper to completely cover your drains, do that when not using it, it should keep them from getting to other areas of the house and mutilpying so badly.
Answer:
We had them flying around our fruit bowl last year. Dh finally resorted to vacuuming them up one night, which did actually work, but boy, was it silly watching him stand there with the hose attachment in hand, just waiting... I've also heard that a little apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap (or plastic wrap) works really well too. Hope you can get rid of them soon!
