I had a matte finish at my old house and loved my floors. Looooooved them! I have been to people's homes with a glossy finish and scratches show up easier as well as marks from the kid's shoes - although the marks come off, you don't always have time to scrub them. Plus - it's too expensive and too much trouble to get them refinished very often, so you want those scratches hidden.
I know some think it's expensive, but I used the swiffer wet jet on mine for "in-between" cleanings, you can buy bottles of the liquid that are just for hardwood floors. For good cleanings, I used some stuff by Murphy's Oil - made for cleaning the hardwoods. You will LOVE hardwoods! My new house has tiles, and I miss the hardwoods.

I prefer matte finish for all the above reasons. I do not like the swiffer though, I used it once on a new floor and it reuined the finish. I stick to Murphy's Oil Soap for hardwood, and vinegar water for the rest.
