Baseball bat & accessories

Ask:
Which one & what to buy for 8 years old?& ofcourse from where. Thanks a lot
Answer:

For an 8 yo I would just go to Target, WalMart or Play-It-Again Sports. PIA is a great resource if there is one in your area. As far as a bat goes, I wouldn't spend more than $30 on a new one, much less if it is used. To get the correct weight, have your child hold the bat with his arm extended straight out to the side. If he can support the bat for 5-10 seconds without letting the bat fall, the bat is the right weight. HTH

My ds is 5 and started playing t-ball this year... We went out and got him everything that they use. However, I think the bat is the thing that he can do with out unless you are going to play with him at home. The team normally provides the bats and the helmets. Every child must have their own glove. We got him a helmet at walmart because I didn't feel conformtable with him using the helmet that all the kids used. There was a Lice outbreak at him school in a few of the classrooms and I didn't want to take the chance. We like to practice with him at home that is why we got him the bat. I got it at Toys R us. I got the same kind that the team has. When you go to the bat section all the bats will have the recommended age of use because of the weight of the bat. It is pretty easy... Good Luck!!!!

Any good sporting goods store in your area can show you what the "approved" bat is for his age/baseball level. Some leagues are extremely picky and the umpires won't let them use a bat that isn't approved by little league. I don't understand it all, but we have a good sports store (Academy) close by. Some of the items you can get cheaper at Walmart or Target. The best money I spent was for the bag - the bat, glove, helmet, extra balls - all fit inside and now that our season is over, it's perfect for storing everything. They had them as cheap as $8 at our store, the helmet is the other necessity. Put his name on it - visible from the inside and outside, NO HELMET SHARING!!! Unless you like picking lice out of his hair and washing everything in your house with hot water and stinky chemicals!!!

Have fun - we had such a great experience with t-ball this year with my 5 year old. It was a blast!

My 5-yr old DD started T-ball this year. Her cap and T-shirt were supplied by the league. I bought her:

- T-ball bat - very lightweight. Hers is the bat all the kids chose when they get their turn to hit.
- Batting helmet - all the girls have pink
- Glove - there are some great ones out there now, very soft, and DD's glove lights up when the ball hits the pocket.
- Extra balls - she has one pink ball and a few regular ones. Put your name on the balls or mark them so you know they are yours.

Many kids also have the nice uniform pants - white or grey - with a belt in the team color.

Items we may purchase in the future:

- Batting glove - this is a thin leather glove, much like a driving glove, that they use while batting however, many of the kids keep it on and use it while throwing as well.
- Under jersey shirt - this helps wick away perspiration and keeps the kid cooler under their t-shirt. The undershirts also come with cool little tabs at the shoulders so the sleeves of the t-shirt can be cinched up. Since the uniform pants are white (ie: see through) there are pant liners you can get that are made with the same wicking material.
- Practice set-up. In our case, DD has a practice T. However, an older kid would need a ball thrower and maybe a return net or target net.

I also recommend a few baseball related DVDs for inspiration. There are tons out there.

We went to a sporting good store in our area, Big 5, which was very well stocked. There are other stores like Sports Authority and other national chains. The used sporting equipment stores are great. They frequently stock new items to fill-out their used inventory.

I would go to walmart for the baseball bat. MY ds has been playing baseball since tball and is now age 9 and we got his from walmart for $15. We did not want to spend alot of money because as they get older they are need a new bat. He only recently got a baseball helmet this year because his aunt bought it for his bday. Though those are nice to have since they wont have to share.

If you child is just trying baseball for the first time i would not spend alot of money until you know that this is something that they like and will keep up. I would use whatever bats the team provides.

Hope this helps
