Ask:
Last weekend the boys were outside iin the backyard playing with their dad, Josh (3 yr old) had to go to the bathroom, well I guess my dh is lazy because he let him go in bushs and he created a Monster. 3x today alone Josh has taken it upon himself to go behind the bushs and then comes to me to help him with his pants I told him he is not allowed to do this anymore but then again he goes. This last time I gave him a time out but I dont think cares about that. Any advice besides smacking dh upside the head with a frying pan????
While most of time I am out there with them I am not always. I do hear them and am only in the kitchen.

Time out or even time IN where brother gets to keep playing or gets a special treat might do the trick. My oldest ds did this a time or two...and my youngest, oh Lord. He would literally open up the front door and pee out of it onto the front porch!! Dh didn't teach him that one, though! He just couldn't see the difference. In HIS mind, outside was outside! I chewed dh up and down...and then we punished Riely only a few times before he grasped that it was NOT a good idea to do...at least when Mom was around!

Don't be too hard on Josh! It is a rite of passage for little boys to pee on trees or bushes. DS did it a few times, and the phase passed... At least you didn't get a call from the preschool asking you to come pick up your step-son b/c he peed on the tree during outdoor time...was my face red!
It'll pass.... make sure you ask him beofre you go out, do you have to go? And ask him periodically if he has to go...It is something new and for a boy there is something exciting about peeing on a tree...kind of like marking his territory

His second defense was but Chip does it, okay but Chip is a dog so he is allowed Yes I suppose it is a rite of passage. I know Evan did it a couple of times but Josh is really doing it.
Jennifer, If it continues to get out of hand a time IN might be more effective.

Well I must be a bad mom because I could care less if my ds pees outside! He knows to find something to hide behind but it honestly doesn't bother me. I potty trained him by taking him up to our house in the mountains for a week and letting him run around with no pants on outside. I told him to aim for the ants, the rocks, whatever was around. He loved it! Still to this day at 6 1/2 if he is playing in the back yard and has to pee, he will just duck behind a tree.
Am I the only mom that isn't bothered by this?
Answer:
I don't think it's a good idea especially in mixed company. For example Logan who is 4 does this all the time and probobly in front of Zoe who is 5 and even my son who is 5 is uncomfortable with Logan doing this. Does Zoe really need to see Logan's private parts? No. The next thing you know he'll probobly be crapping outside too. Let's not be too lazy to teach our kids to use the bathroom at our own house.
Answer:
My neice did this for a while! She would go beside the house or next to the cars! We finally had to punish her pretty good.
The problem can come when they aren't big enough to keep from exposing themselves. Neighbors in our town have actually called the cops on people. I know if we have a boy he will likely whip it out to pee outside, I have a dh that does the same thing (not in town of course) and it isn't such a big deal to me. But pooping (which is what my neice was doing) is unacceptable. Gross.

I guess that was directed at me. I certainly don't consider myself lazy. My ds would never do this in mixed company or at someone else's house, but if he wants to pee in the yard at his own house it is fine with me. We are easygoing around here and I teach my children to be comfortable with their bodies and not ashamed of them. To each her own, I suppose.

My dh also does this. We are an outdoors kind of family - we do a lot of hiking and dh and I were huge backpackers before kids. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Now I totally agree with the outdoor pooping. None of that! My ds has never ever done that. He would be mortified. He likes privacy when he poops.

Oh the stories I could tell!! lol!!
We live on a farm and I'm fine with my ds going behind the barn or shed to pee, no-one is gonna see him. He's never pooped outside, nor would he. I think it depends on where you live and who's around to notice.
