Genius/Gifted child? My dd counted to 50 yesterday!

Ask:
I almost fell over! She started counting and I figured she would stop at 20 (still high), but she kept going. She went to 49 actually and then said "forty ten", but that was still really good. She just turned 3 in April!!!

I think she is going to be my gifted child! She does stuff like this all the time and just amazes me! Her latest thing is asking me how to spell words like "stop" and "dog", etc.

I am so glad we decided to put her in school next year at the Montesorri School.
Answer:

Of course she is a genius!!! She takes after her mom!! That's great! I can't get my 4 yr old to count to 10 correctly
Answer:

I'm checking into that early enrollment to Harvard...I'll let you know...
Answer:

Montessori will be a great fit for her My daughter has been in Montessori school for 2 years. She will be going to kindergarten almost ready to start reading and she tries to spell words by sounding them out (example: JENFR + JENNIFER). She can already do most of the skills that kindergarteners need to know so I hope she will not be bored and that her teacher will let her learn how to read soon after school starts and not make her wait to the end of the year...since she can sound out and read basic 3-4 letter words.

Answer:

My 5 year old did stuff like that and he is a major workbook addict. He loves them. You can get great ones that do a lot of counting. Go ahead and get the pre-k ones - not the 3 year old ones. I always try to teach "up" and I think most workbooks are on a lower level anyway. Also, flash cards are fun. He loves anything like that. My 3 year old, however, is a different story - while she is very talented artistically, she has little time for counting and can only spell her name and her brother's name. It's funny how different they each are!

Go with the counting - it's so much fun to find stuff around the house to count.

Be prepared!! She will soar there!! When we put ds in his Montessori we had no idea he'd be doing the work he was - at 3! Hang on, it's one wild ride!!

Wow, that's great!

Gee, my child must be on the very low end of the learning spectrum. She's three and not interested in counting or learning to write her name, much less siblings' names. She refuses to sit still long enough to even color, much less learn how to write her name! Not even if I make dotted lines and just have her trace them. She's just not interested.

Don't feel bad Martha!! Mine is 4 and cannot do any of those things either. He has problems counting to 10!! The preschool staff assures me he is perfectly normal!!
Answer:

Montessori is a wonderful method, she will love it!!
Answer:

Martha, neither of my other two children did this. This is totally foreign territory to me and, I have to admit, a bit scary. I don't want her to be different, but there are times, she just surprises me.

Your child is completely normal! My dd is the freak!!! And I mean that in a very loving way. I am just scared for her - and me in the future if this keeps up. Sometimes being a smart girl is not the easiest way to grow up socially, if you know what I mean. I was not near as smart as I think she is, but I was smart and I remember being different than other kids. I also remember my grandmother telling me to be "stupid" on purpose so guys would be interested. That horrifies me to this day! But, those issues are a few years away. I was just hoping to have her be more on level like the boys were.

My other son went to pre-k at the Montesorri school and did quite well, so his teacher suggested sending my dd.
