Weight Loss and Nursing

Ask:
Ok This is my first post on this board. I am trying to shed some pounds while nursing. I started working at it after new years and have only proceeded to gain 5 more. I am 5,6 and 215 lbs when for my height I should be 145lbs. Weight loss has always been a struggle and Nursing seams to have made it more difficult. I find different plans to try and then read the warning "DO NOT USE while nursing". The only one I have found that has a plan for nursing moms is Weight watchers (I have been on it twice before). The draw back is I don't have the funds to afford the program or funds to afford a gym membership. Any suggestions would be great, I am at the stage in nursing where if something did happen to cause me to loose my supply I would not be devestated. Did anyone else have to struggle with this? I am tired of wearing maternity clothes with a DD who is over a year.

Hmmm, let me check into this a little bit and I will get back to you on it! I know a lot of people that have lost all of their baby weight while nursing (I was not able to nurse my second one but I believe the dr gave me something on how to eat properly while nursing).
Answer:

I had this issue. When I am nursing I lose all but 10 pounds of my pregnancy weight, but then no matter what CAN'T lose that last 10. Some women hold onto the fat stores while nursing, and it's possible you are one of them. I just weaned my 17 month old a few weeks ago and I am starting to gradually feel it come off. Give it time. Eat healthy, don't drastically cut calories, exercise. Whatever you don't lose now, you'll be able to once you've weaned. And know that you are doing an AWESOME thing for your little one by nursing her. Kudos mama.
Answer:

I too did not lose weight while nursing. With both my kids I everyone always told me the pounds would fly off, but they never did. As soon as I began weaning I saw my weight gradulally lower. I had a hard time with exerise because my breasts were too big to jump or run around and wearing a sports bra made me leak. You are doing such a good thing for your child and eventually you will regain your body back.
Answer:

That whole "you'll lose so much weight when you nurse"....never worked for me either. In fact i nursed for 18 months and in that time my weight went up.

Weight Watchers has an on-line board that you can go to....also you can sign up and use the e-tools for less than what it costs to go to the meetings and etc.....

And, holy cow, woman!!! In 3 days, we have you POSTING!!!!! LOL Yikes...I better watch out. My status is at risk!!! (just kidding....I love it!) As far as I know WW does NOT have a program for nursing moms. NO program does. I nursed all of mine...and I not only never lost weight while doing it...I actually kept extra on. I just would be content with what you are now..and know that when you do finally wean, you will get to see big results then!

I just did a double take as well. I lost about 25 lbs right away with dd #1. didn't lose a lbs with dd #2 or #3. that whole lose weight breastfeeding is not a guanantee, I wish docs and nurses would mention this to moms. And when I got a baby doc (intern) who said I'll lose weight I set him straight. You actually need 500 extra calories per day in order to breastfeed. That is what my dietician told me. I'm prediabetic so they monitored my eating while I nursed.

I think she ment her first post on the Fitness board....I could be wrong but that's what i'm thinking.
Answer:

Weight Watchers Online does have a section on losing weight while nursing. I believe a nursing mother gets an extra 50 points on their points plan a week.

Answer:

The prices we pay for our kids... I feel your pain. I have a 12 week old daughter that I am nursing. I was pretty proud of myself during my pregnancy because I actually weighed less after her birth than before I got pregnant. (Big time morning sickness... wasn't the most pleasant way to lose weight!) However, I've gained 10 pounds since then. I'm not sure if my body is requiring a little extra fat to produce mass quantities of milk or if the weight gain is due to too much snacking while my DD is "eating". I do need to back away from the chocolate

Hang in there!
