How much TIME do you spend "teaching"

Ask:
I've been so lax since jenna was born, but next month we are going into our regular school schedule. I'm trying to come up with a set amount of time on teaching. It's hard for me since I do preschool type learning through play all day long and work around Jenna's naps for actual sit down/writing work. We do educational activities throughout the day but how much time should I set aside now that i'm starting k? I'm thinking continue to learn through play all day like we do but make a set block of 2 hours sometime for at the table work. Is that good? How much time does everyone spend?
Answer:

I had the same "schedule" for preschool as you do. At that age, I feel they just need to "learn" as they play and read books. The curriculum we are going to start in two weeks for K says we should spend 90 minutes, 5 days a week on "school" work -- reading, science, Bible, pre-math. They have a day 6 on each week where they encourage active play and field trips.
Answer:

Hmm...no idea, although I think I read somewhere that for HS K you do have to show that you did school work for 90 minutes a day. I don' think that meant specifically "sit down at the table work". We also learn all day through play and books. I think it really also depends on the child. I know my ds, who will be four in November, would never last through 2 hours a day of sitting at the table, no matter how fun and interesting I made it, unless I broke it up into 15 minutes here and there (and maybe not even then). But he is young still, and he's doing pretty well. The other day at the pool I heard him explaining to my mom what a vortex is (learned that one from dh).
