Ask:
What do you think of it? Do you think the children do better without the long break?
Answer:
Chuck Schumer suggested it here in NY. I will be livid if it goes through. I look forward to having some time with my kids. They will have their whole life to start running the rat race, why can't they have some time to relax and be kids when they are little. This would probably be a deal braker for me and turn me to home schooling.
Answer:
I don't think that I would mind it that much....at least how I am aware of it. The kids still get the same amount of time off, it's just at different times. 20 yrs ago, in CO (my dad lived there and my friend in the neighborhood attended yr round school) they went Jan, Feb Mar on...got April off...went May, June, July on...got August off...went Sept, Oct, Nov on...got Dec off. When they were in a grade they were in that grade Sept - July.
Sometimes I think it would be nice for the kids, I know mine get sooo bored toward the end of summer break. I would still have time off with them, but would get to enjoy different seasons activities without them in school. It would be a pain however if you had to do daycare so sporatically.
Answer:
We don't have it either, but I think I would really like it. Summer gets long for the kids (and me!!) I think that we would enjoy the shorter breaks throughout the year, and I don't think you would have to spend so much time on review since the kids would not have as long to forget things.
Answer:
We're in year-round and LOVE it! There's a thread in here about it somewhere, they did a vote about year-round vs traditional. I love that we only have a 6 week summer, they're not prone to forget as much and they go back to school just about the time that they start to get bored. They're in school for about 3 months at a time, then have a 3 week break, perfect for when they start to get tired of school! This year we're starting a new track, they start school the end of July and will have most of September off. I'm happy about that because September is still hot enough that we can enjoy the lake, river and camping. I'm all smiles for year-round
Answer:
I think I would like that. It seems to me kids would be less likely to forget things they have learned. A few schools in our district do year round. They are in the poorer neighborhoods and set it up this way so kids have more structure and are less likely to get into trouble during the hot summer months. They have had success with it.
Answer:
We are year round here in CA and I really like it. My ds goes to school for 3 months and then is off for 4 weeks. He enjoys his off track time and just when he's getting to that "I'm bored" stage it's time to go back to school. We are able to take trips when most kids are in school and we don't break the bank paying for trips because or trips are spread out throughout the year. As a former teacher, now sahm I was on year round and loved it. The kids picked up right where we left off and we didn't have to spend time reviewing. Hooray for year round school!
Answer:
I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but here year-round is strictly OPTIONAL. Of course there are more traditional schools than year-round and it's your choice to decide where your kids go. Our year-round also only goes through 5th grade, after that it's only traditional. I'm looking forward to having one-on-one (and one-on-two) time when the boys are split up on different schedules.
