Portable Air Cond. Units - are they any good?

Ask:
Dh and I were thinking about getting one for our little townhome. It gets pretty hot in the summer and we dont want the usual A/C that hangs out of windows.

Does anyone have one of these? I believe you plug them in and thats it. They are pricey so I dont want to get something that doesnt work as good as I think.

Any help is appreciated!
Answer:

I have never found one that doesn't still need to be vented out of a window (with an unattractive hose). If you find any promising ones, let me know because I would definitely like something like that for rooms where a window unit doesn't really fit.
Answer:

Oh, me, too...I would like to know more about this. We have a large home, and my dd's bedroom, upstairs, has a huge window, directly into the afternoon sun. It gets HOT in there. It is a problem with a lot of houses in our area, as we see those ugly window units once in a while, sticking out a top story window of a house that costs 1/2 million dollars (not that MINE costs that much! I wish!). I would love to find an alternative for her, though.
Answer:

The only ones that we have ever been able to find.....have a long ugly hose that you have to put to a window. It actually looks worse than the kind that hang out of your window IMO.
Answer:

I saw a vent les sone on HSN or QVC, maybe check their websites. It was an AC/heater and dehumidifier in one, it was about $700, but no vents and washable filters.
Answer:

I read about the ventless air conditioners. It said that they work best in areas with 50% humidity or less. My thought was that I really only need the air when it is 80% or more humidity! I was bummed because, like you, I wanted to get away from blocking up one of my windows!
Answer:

OK, so last year, we had this horrible heat wave and we purchased one of these units. It was HORRIBLE. It had the hose that vented out the window, which was fine with us. And when it ran, it was SUPER loud, which was also okay. But what happened was that the exhaust hose would heat up within 15 minutes and actually start making the place hotter. It was terrible. So we returned it and got a portable swamp cooler from Walmart. It didn't cost that much, and it's GREAT. When it gets really hot, we just pour some cold water in it and turn it on high. It's quieter than the AC unit, uses less electricity and works 100 times better.

Good luck!

The summer that dd was due was a very HOT summer. We had been in our house for 6 months. We didn't have A/C yet and didn't have any money. We bought a little portable a/c unit from sam's club. It looked like a box fan. No hoses. It had a tray in the bottom that you would fill with water. It sucked! It didn't cool the house at all. The house was getting into the high 80's inside. I was dying and ready to pop! We took the unit back and got financing an a real A/C. We got our A/C installed the day we came home from the hospital with dd. That was a nightmare, but we won't go into that right now.
Answer:

Have you gotten a quote on what it would cost to add a central A/C to your forced air furnace?
Answer:

Have you tried anything else to cut down sun that comes in? If you own your townhouse you can get the windows tinted. Put up curtains and line the back with sun blocker fabric(not sure what the real name is). Our A/c unit for our house was around $2,500. But we have a 2,000 sq ft house. If your townhouse is smaller you wouldn't need a unit as big as we got.
