Honestly I have had several vacumes and they all suck--or I mean they dont suck I think you should save your money and get a spendy vacume. I have had every kind of vacume that is made in Target, Wal-mart and K-mart. I have found they all get clogged and they all loose suction.
Cheep vacumes are cheep vacumes----however I gotta tell you that I have been using my husbands "shop vac" on my stairs and entry----IT WORKS REALLY WELL--- I know its a sad reply but its my honest advice... good luck, maybe if you have a shop vac you can use it till you can save up your money for a more spendy vacume

I just bought a Dirt Devil Reaction which I very HIGHLY recommend. My MIL has a Dyson and I love it, but we couldn't afford to spend $500 on a vacuum. We needed one that had an allergen filter, and was good with animal hair, as we have a long-haired dog. The Reaction has the same cyclonic technology as the Dyson and a filter and is bagless. The Reaction was $160 with tax at Home Depot, comes with a 4 year warranty, and is comparative in performance to the Dyson. I've used both on my carpets, and both work equally well. Actually, I prefer my Reaction to my MIL's Dyson. Hers is heavier, and clunkier than mine. Mine has removeable cyclonic things inside the dual tubes that can be cleaned. I don't like the suction thing on the top of her Dyson handle (my shirt always got sucked into it hehe). Mine has a light on the bottom. I was using hers for a while b'c our old piece of junk died, and when I brought mine home, I vacuumed for the fun of it (I had just used hers that morning before we left for the store) and I picked up a TON of grime out of my carpets! I read reviews on it and a few people said it spit stuff out of the back.. I've never had that happen. I broke some crackers and stuff up and shoved them into my carpet to see how it would handle and it sucked them right up - no flying things anywhere! Definitely recommend it - you will NOT be sorry! (Try it for a week - if you don't like it, return it and try something else. It's worth it - believe me!)

I don't know how well they work, but I saw two different ones on clearance today at Target. One was one of those types you see at the movie theatres- that doesn't have a bag or a motor or anything. You just kind of sluph it across the carpet. My sister has one and likes it. The other I saw was a small one, I don't remember the brand name, but it had a ton of attatchments so it could do stairs, drapery, etc. It was only $35.

Good luck on whatever you find.

I just bought a new vacuum and I got a Dyson Animal and we love it!!! Honestly I think my DH has used it more than me. It is his new toy!!! I think it does a great job. But I know that it is expensive. We were lucky enough to find ours at a pawn shop. It was used but barely. It still had the registration papers with it.
