Ask:
If you want a simple Christmas, summer is the time to talk to your extended family about your plans. The first year we tried, we waited until the fall and people had already started to shop and make plans for Christmas. The next year we told everyone in the summer that we wanted a simple Christmas this year, one small gift each - and preferably an experience gift (lessons, museum membership, theatre tickets, etc). It's been great but the secret to it working was announcing it in the summer when there is lots of advance notice.
Answer:
Now is also the time to start your shopping (if you haven't already). There are some great toy deals to be had (check out the Online Bargains forum). You can spread out your spending over several months - plus, you won't have to fight the crowds at the last minute finishing up your shopping. Get your shopping list put together today!
Answer:
I know I am hosting a Taste of home Party to get some christmas shopping done and get a hosting discount on them. I think starting now also puts the pressure off the budget in December.
My city is always advertising having a waste free holiday and one year I would like to try it. Its where you cut the packaging and give experiences like memberships at museums, or tickets to things or even gift cards.
Answer:
I tried to simplify a little last year and would like to keep it up this year. I just have a hard time getting other people not to spend $$$ on us. I feel bad giving someone cookies and a picture of the baby when I get cookware in return.
We've brought up the idea of cutting some people off the list (DH aunts & uncles) but they seemed to be almost insulted by it - saying that we weren't expected to spend very much - I've also been given the impression that my DH may have handled the conversation poorly.
