Occipital Neuralgia

Ask:
Has anyone been diagnosed with this or known anyone who has? What was your (or their) experience/treatment?

I went to a new neurologist yesterday. And, after nearly a year and a half of migraine misdiagnosis, I have been newly diagnosed with occipital neuralgia.

It sounds like it is easily treatable. I go for steroid shots to the occipital nerves (2 nerves that enter the base of the skull) next week. It usually takes 7-10 days to get full relief. Then I can go off my migraine meds! Occasionally, patients need more than one treatment of steroids. This treatment is a nerve block.

But, I am so excited to have a diagnosis. This all makes so much more sense than the "status migrainosis" diagnosis. I had a bicycle accident when I was a kid that caused a "whiplash" injury (chin hit the pavement before anything else did). And, this probably all stems from that injury more than 20 years ago!

I can't wait to be pain and medicine free again!
