3 1/2 year old's confusing health issue

Ask:
I don't know if this is the correct place to post this but the "health" section seems to be filled with the issues of parents and adults, so I put this here...

Three years ago my husband and I were told that my daughter has a heat/humid intollerance. She gets high acid levels in her body when she gets hot - it's like her body is missing that thing that cools it self down when it's hot outside...

Now two months ago we started an all new problem. Major constipation that cannot be cured with any thing we've tried so far. She's had untrasounds and X-Rays and she is filled with stool (in her colon). She doesn't have a bowel movement very often (like twice a week) and when she does, she really has to work at it. We eat healthy foods, drink lots of fluids and even from the Dr.s standpoint, he cannot figure out why she has this problem so bad. He is sending us to a ped. gastroenterologist. We can't get in to see the local one until July 2nd (which is a long time to be living with this problem). Now in the last week, we are starting to get concerned, because none of her medicines are working and she's getting other side effects as well! She'll get these CRAZY fevers (101- 103 at times) and they last for a few hours, then go away. She's also been throwing up once and a while- a few times a week ( 3 times this week, all on different days) . Before she throws up she's very tired and even falls asleep, wakes up to throw up, cies and feels miserable, then goes back to sleep. Most of the time after she wakes up she'll be back to her old self again.

We are very concerned. Have any of you been through any type of a similar situation? Where do we even start? We are wondering if this is infact a gastroentorology problem, or could it be something more. And is it tied into her heat problem or is it just some other side effect that she is having from one bigger problem? We'll see the Dr. but at this point I cannot be patient and wait around for something to figure itself out. I am a worried parent...
Answer:

I think I might call the dr. and ask to be put on a cancellation call list...if someone calls to cancel, they call you to give you first dibs to come on in early. I would be worried about waiting that long, too. How scary. I will remember her in my prayers.
Answer:

I agree w/blessed, and would also try to find someone else - there's got to be more than one somewhere! What would happen if he retired or got sick? See if the Dr. can give you another name or call this Dr. himself to get you in. Sometimes that will do the trick - or even if you, yourself tell the office staff how bad it is...
Answer:

In the short term i would suggest checking out this website they have alot of helpful information on that site and even a discussion board.Severe constipation could be a form of Irritiable Bowel Syndrome.
Answer:

Poor kid (mommy too) I would def be seing about putting on a cancellation list!! that Is all I can think of just what he others have said!! good luck and prayrers for you all!!!
Answer:

Not sure what could be wrong with her, but I can see how you'd be worried. For the bowel thing, just a thought...it could be hirschsprung's disease. It's when a part of the bowel lacks nerves, so the stool doesn't move through it right. So the bowel sort of balloons out at that point and the child has a lot of trouble moving their bowels. My nephew had this and had surgery about 20 years ago. They remove the part of the bowel without proper innervation and then sew the two ends back together. I would think the pediatric gastroenterologist would be able to diagnosis something like that. I'm not sure though how that would tie into the heat intolerance problem. Good luck finding some answers.
Answer:

Just another thought....have you seen a pediatric neurologist?? If not, I would highly recommend doing so. The heat intolerance could be linked to a neurological problem. HTH

I'm sorry to hear that your child is going thru this (you too!). How stressful!

You might try calling and seeing if they can recommend someone else. When my older son was small, we were referred to a Pediatric GI and had to wait several weeks for an appt. I was at my wits end, he was crying notstop, wouldn't eat etc I waited a day or two and then called, and I was nice about it, but I explained that I was anxious to see Dr X, but I couldn't wait 3 weeks, and was there anyone else in the office I could see sooner or could they recommend someone. They did get me in later that week, actually at the end of the day after his regular appts, which was very nice of them to make accomodations. But it's worth it to ask!
Answer:

I agree with the others, ask for a sooner appt or ask them to recommend someone else. I'd be concerned as well and wouldn't wait til July for an answer. Even the ER if I had to!
Someone has to be able to see you this week! Good luck and keep us posted, we too can learn from you.
Answer:

Poor Baby!!!

I have a chronic inflammatory disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. It is related to Crohn's disease which has chronic constipations or severe diahrea as a symptom. It is also related to arthritic psorisis. Because these are diseases of inflammation, fever is ever-present.

I have also experienced the cycle that you described of being in severe pain, vomitting then passing out or fainting; much as you described your baby 'falling asleep'. IF that should ever happen again, it is very important that you take her to an ER. Having a baby that is so sick they are listless or lethargic is very serious.

Does she ever have other symptoms? Rash? Goopy eyes? Swelling? Muscle spasms? Has a doctor done blood tests for C-REP (c-reactive protein) or a urine test called a SED rate? Both are signs of chronic inflammation. Have they done a liver and kidney function test? Does she have allergies or asthma? What medications is she taking? Does asprin or ibuprofen help?

The ER doctor is the one who eventually diagnosed me. I was just lucky that he happened to recently read an article about the disease and it triggered his memory when I came in. My form of arthritis is considered a "man's disease" so I've also been very lucky that I have doctors that are more modern and recognize that women are more likely to be under diagnosed.
