Ask:
Let me preface this by saying I fully expect the answer to be line dry my clothes/don't use a dryer. I would LOVE to but I hate how stiff line dried clothes feel.
Here is my problem... a lot of my shirts are developing these little holes, I don't know why but I refer to them as pinholes. They are usually so small my camera didn't even pick them up, but they bug the heck out of me and get worse over time. I HATE shopping for clothes so I'm looking to see if there is a way to prevent this from happening.
This shirt is the worst, the holes have grown larger than the rest because, well, I wear this shirt a lot!
Answer:
You can use the dryer less by just running it about 5 min. and then hanging the clothes.
Also you should always do up all the buttons and zippers so they don't rub so much on other clothes.
That's all I can think about for now.
Good luck
Answer:
Could it be moths? The only time I've seen holes like that is when my great aunt had some clothes moths and they were ruining her sweaters.
The only other thing I can think of is do you have any pets with claws that you hold? My Mom's cat is really skittish and he's often crawling over her shoulder to 'get away' and he's ruined some nightgowns of hers with his claws and then over time as the nightgown is washed the holes get bigger.
Where did you buy the shirt? What fabric is it made of? How do you wash/dry it? Where are the holes on the shirt? Are they in the same area on your other shirts that are developing holes? Could it be something you where with the shirt? A purse, a belt etc that is rubbing against it and making the holes?
Answer:
I take clothes and line dry them then I will put it on afluff dryin the dryer and that helps the stiffness
Answer:
I still have clothes from 20 years ago and I have never line dried (gonna start, just for electricity costs, though). I would say to make sure you do up all hooks, zippers and velcro before luandering things.
Answer:
I've never seen moths in the house, the closet is open to the bedroom (was a sliding door, really awkward, we took it off within two weeks of moving in 9 years ago.)
No pets until two weeks ago, guinea pigs, and these holes were there before them.
The shirt in the pic is a Target brand, all the shirts in question are t-shirts of the Target/Walmart/Kmart variety (I know, not made to last). Now that you mention it, all the holes are usually on the front, though in various spots.
I wash regular cycle cold water, dry in the dryer. I used to use warm water until about a year ago.
I don't do up zippers and things when I wash except the couple of pairs of jeans of mine that never get unzipped (zippers don't stay up so I fixed that with a safety pin permanently installed behind) never occurred to me to do that, will be trying to start now.
Thanks for the help!
Answer:
Do you wear jewelry that could be catching on the front of your shirts during the day? Maybe rings or a bracelet? I've had my bracelet catch on my clothes before and make a small hole.
Answer:
I would send a copy of the picture to the place where you bought it - to me, it looked like inferior knitting together of the threads.
Answer:
The only jewelry I wear is sometimes stud earrings to keep my holes open, which I usually leave in a couple of weeks, take out a couple of weeks at a time, no real issues there. I don't even wear my wedding set because when DD was two weeks old the cheap setting cut her leg, and I immediately put it away... somewhere... but no one can remember where.
*threadjacking my own thread* I know that sounds HORRIBLE but really the only reason we even got wedding bands is because the notary who married us was insistent that we had to exchange rings, and all the others we had asked didn't do marriages because they would feel responsible if it didn't work out. So anyway, we got a cheap $60 set at Walmart, and I despise gold with a passion, so I was never happy with it anyway. The idea was to replace it with sterling, white gold or platinum somewhere down the line but honestly? We never really felt the need for a symbolic representation of our love, and that is even more so reinforced by our goals to lead a simpler life and live frugally.
*back on topic* Most of my shirts I'm having issues with are several years old, quite possibly came from second hand stores anyway, I wouldn't really feel comfortable trying to hold the company accountable for the damage. Walmart/Target/Kmart brand clothing are obviously going to be lower quality, I'm just looking for ideas on what I can try to do in the future to prolong the life of my not yet damaged clothing.
Answer:
I get these too! Mine are always on the front of my shirts, right around the button area of my pants. I don't wear a belt, but all I can figure out is that the button of my pants rubs against my shirt while I'm washing dishes. I feel your pain. All of my favorite shirts have these!
