Ask:
My dd is one month old and having problems with her formula. I have tried Similac Advance with Iron, Isomil (Soy) with Iron, Enfamil Lipil with Iron. She has had either diarrhea, vomitting or gas on these formulas. Can anyone suggest a good formula? I have ask her Ped. and he said he would not switch formula. So you can see why I am getting her a new Ped., but she doesn't go until the 23rd of this month.
Answer:
How long are you on these formulas. It takes at least a week to get used to them. It is possible your DD is alergic to formula. First, I'd try to stay on a formula for a week or more - I used Carnation good start which wasn't bad. My DD thrived on Isomil - we switched the target brand soy because it was cheaper.
My DD did very well on soy but NO other formula, but make sure to get Mylocon (gas medicine) because it can make them very gassy. If it's possible to get yourself pumping breast milk - i would consider it.
Answer:
You may want to try Alimentum, it helped us a lot!!!
Or you may want to put a little rice in her forumla!
We go through about a box of rice every two days!!!
Answer:
When Aidan was born, we started with Enfamil, then tried Similac and finally ended up with Good Start Supreme with DHA & ARA. He's been on it since, is almost 10 months old and has had no problems. My pediatrician LOVES it, recommends it for all his patients.
Answer:
Target brand also has one that is like Gentlease by enfamil, made for gassy babies. It's a little more broken down than regular formula. The Target brand is about $15 a can instead of $24+ and is made by the same company that makes Bright Begginings formula, all have to meet very strict government guidelines. My Ped said the name brands are no better than store brand for this reason.
Answer:
Well the Dr told you that b/c your baby is only one month old and you have been through 3 different kinds! That is alot! It does take a week at least to adjust to formula. Also your baby could be having these effects b/c you keep changing formulas!!! But I agree with Amanda, you can try Alimentum, just remember to give it a week or two! And you aren't suppose to put cereal in a bottle with formula b/c it is a choking hazard. Did you breast feed at all in the beginning? Because she also could be reacting to being switched off breast and put on formula. Formula is much harder to digest! If you did and you could try to put back on breast milk that would help. If not, then try Alimentum and stop switching until you see the next dr! Keep us updated on what you try! Good Luck!

Thanks for your advice. Here is the background on the formula issue. My dd was started on the Enfamil Lipil with Iron in the hospital. I can't afford formula, so of course you have to deal with WIC. Well they only have Similac Advance with Iron, unless you have a doctors prescription (he would not give me a prescription for the Enfamil, told me it was the same as Similac). So I had to put her on that after we came from the hospital. She was on it for about a couple of weeks. Well it made her have painful (screaming to the top of her lungs) gas and diarrhea. I called him to see what to do about it and never got a call back. I had to keep calling him. He said that he would not switch her formula. So the only other thing I could think was that she is lactose intolerant. That is when I tried the Similac Isomil. This is the only formula I have switched her to. I have given it a week and she still seems very fussy and gassy.
Answer:
My Dr put my dd on Similac low iron and OMG and world of difference it made. She is a completely different baby. They don't suggest it but it was a last resort. The dr's own ds is on it. She made the comment that with all extra crap they put in formula we should have super babies.
Answer:
Gentelease worked for my daughter - that and a month or two on Zantac - but the formula made her a new kid - way less spitting up, crying, curling up and diarrhea. Give it a try and remember - listening to your Ped is good but they need to listen to you as well - it is your child - you know them best - they count on you to fight for them!
Answer:
I don't wnat to disagree with anyone, but Stacia said that it is a choking hazard to put rice in formula!
Well I have to disagree... All 3 of my kids have seen a Ped. Gastrologist, and she has told us to put rice in their bottles. It thickens it and it is easier on them to digest and where when they reflux it doesn't come back up!
I don't want to start a war, but I just wanted to tell you what we are doing and I am in no way a dr. but I do what the dr. tells us 2
Amanda
