kitchen cabinets

Ask:
Have any of you tackled painting your kitchen cabinets? I have half my doors off and sanded, but am still a while away from completion. My walls are a caramel color, and we haven't painted the trim yet. I love ALL colors so I want something that will blen well, I also like bright colors. I have a cream/light off white that I am looking at, but I want something that will be very durable, cause I aint doin this again at this house! Just curious!!!! Thanks!!!!
Answer:

Oh yes, dh and I tackled this project about 1 1/2 years ago. We did sand everything down, primed and painted the cabinets white. We painted our walls a deep burgundy color and then the cabinets and all the trim we painted white. We really like it. But it is a lot of work! We did prime them and painted about 3 coats of paint. It has been really durable and they look nice. Good luck!

DH and I did it about 5 years ago...and then we sold the house less than a year later, ...We sanded, primed, painted (It was white, so I did a few extra coates....3 I think in total). The kitchen looked fantastic...I wantto say we used Olympic brand paint (Lowe's) b/c that is the only paint i will use now, so I think it may have been that brand then too. Good lUck!!!!
Answer:

We just did this not too long ago. The doors are white (washable) and the cabinet frames are red. The handles on the doors are also red. They look really nice!!! It was alot of work, though. If you use a bright color like the red, you have to do several coats.
Answer:

my friend has done this in 2 of her houses that she has lived in. i am going to be doing it sometime soon also. She told me to get a good brush or spray gun will would better but if you use a brush make sure it is a high quality one. Do not use a roller. Also fill all the dings with non shrinking putty. Use a stain blocking primer if the cabinets were previously stained. Gloss paint is the best to use since you will not have to poly it. HTH

ADDed if you have to use a poly make sure it doesn't dry yellow

Thank y'all for replying on that one. They are stained that 70's dk brown stain. We are sanding and primeing them. I am so anxious for them to be done. It's hard to do with little people in the house!! Hopefully when the weather cools off a little bit around here we can get the windows up and fans going and just dive in there and get it finished! If you think of any other good advice let me know.
Answer:

You are an ambitious one! It's so dry here in the desert, in the western USA, that my cabinets, in a natural color, are splintering just a little. They soak up the oil like a thirsty cactus.
Answer:

It is so humid here!!!! When you walk outside it's like you get drenched with a wet blanket. Feels so yucky!!!!! I am ready for cooler weather. Those cool nights in the 50's and highs in the low 70's!!!! Hurry and get here fall!!!! What state are you in? Maybe it will cool off for you too soon.
Answer:

I'm in Arizona, and really am looking forward to fall. I want to send my son outside and want to use the self cleaner on my oven!! Can't do that in this heat - my electric bill would skyrocket!! Spending time at a museum sounds like a cool thing to do in this heat.
