Ask:
The Debt Diet is on this whole week - I've missed the 1st two days, but have the DVR set to record the rest in case I don't get to watch it. Anyone watching it - again? I never did see the last one, which I hope will be on Friday.
Today was the one about Oprah saying we have to live "consciously", that every decision we make has a consequence or effect. She was talking to the mom with the spoiled brat daughters. The therapist (don't remember her name) said that by not providing our children with limits or boundaries is another form of child abuse. I thought that was an interesting point.
Anyone else watch it?
Answer:
saw bits and pieces of it. I am thinking about buying the dvd set on all of it. I could sure sit my dh down to watch it.
He seems to think money grows on trees and the bill fairys pay the bill
Answer:
Yes, and I remember seeing it before. I know a lot of you liked it, but I truly laughed at some of it. First, Oprah is so condescending. I think she has truly forgotten what it's like to not be rich. Someone mentioned about stacks of bills (I think they were hiding them or something.) She goes, aghast, "STACKS of bills?" I don't know about you, but I always have stacks of bills. Then the one guy talks so glowingly about how you can become a millionaire on either $10 or $20 a day. Ummm - that's $300 - $600 a month. I don't exactly have that in my budget! That's for those that do the Starbucks or expensive lunches, etc. every day, and most of us don't do that. There were other things there, but in truth, the condescension outweighed the gems. I've met people who help others with budgeting, money planning, etc., and they paint a pie in the sky, then you find out they are actually in the same boat. That's why they write books!! JMO
Answer:
Overall I liked the shows, but the families drove me nuts. Oprah picks a family of 4 that has 4 cars (bmw, suv's, truck). She didn't know how to cook anything so they ate out 3 meals/day. I thought she was a spoiled brat. Oprah should have had a family from the working poor or a one income family truely struggling to survive. Another family had a teenager with 20-30 bras. Come on.
It was a good wakeup call and motivator for me, but she should have had more realistic families on
Answer:
I missed it the first time it was on so i am catching up now with the reruns. I thought todays episode was pretty boring though. Sometimes i think alot of the stuff is common sense, like, why keep 5 vehicles if you only drive 2 of them? If the house cost too much money, downsize to a smaller more affordable one. Those two teen girls could get jobs and pay most of their own clothing bill! The mom of those spoiled teens refuses to even think about selling the teen's used clothing on ebay, even after the girls bragged they don't even wear half of them anymore.
Do you wonder if there is an incentive for them doing the show? I'm thinking maybe Oprah's show will pay off some of their debt for them. Kinda like a benefit raffle where a certain organization will match whatever funds are raised...know what i mean? I agree with *deemom*, show me a single parent family or the working poor and lets see how these experts can help them?!
Answer:
I watched the first time around and I'm watching it again this week. Even though I don't have near that much debt it does help inspire me to not be like them. I would love for oprah to also do a show on one income families that make $50,000 or less a year. REALITY!!!
Answer:
I agree! It's easy to sit back and say to cut here and there, but what if there's not much to cut? Yeah we have sattelite, but we don't go to the movies or even rent them, it's our only luxury (we don't even go on "vacation"! Sorry, but I get sick of "rich" people complaining about being in debt.
Why don't they take a look at people like us who are living on budgets and one incomes and are happy enough with our lives not to go shopping everyday and spend money we don't have!!
Answer:
OMG I think I only set the DVR for M & T, not for yesterday or today! *Dang, I'm at work and have no way to go set it. *I might have to sneak out early! *!!! *It comes on at 4 pm here. *Darn, when it ran before I didn't have a DVR and she was showing them on different days and I couldn't keep it straight so too hard to "tape" it on regular video.
I am SO bummed I missed yesterday and possibly today. *I might have to see if my dh will get home in time to set the DVR but we just got it on Friday and I haven't shown him how to do everything yet. *I'll have to "walk him through it!"
I REALLy wanted him to see these episodes, me too but he will benefit more since he spends money like water.

the fact that it was missing people like US was brought uo b4. I do recall Kim emailed the show about people/mommies like us. I think we should all email her including here in the email. maybe the producers will get a clue what most of us live like. I'll set up a link so it will be easier for everyone. okay I guess I'll set up a link later dh wants to go eat dinner NOW.
