Formula Question

Ask:
I'm still nursing my 6 mo DS but am supplementing maybe one feeding a day with formula for the convenience and to help him sleep as long as possible at night So Walmart had this great deal on the big cans of Similac. so I bought a value pack. Well, I read the can it says that you're only supposed to use it for a month after it's opened. It's a huge can and it will probably take us at least 2 mo to finish it if not longer. Do you think it's safe to keep using it once that month is up? I did use one can longer than a month and it seemed fine. Just wondering what your experience is.

P.S. I called Similac to see if I could freeze it or something and they said that I shouldn't freeze it or refrigerate it. Apparently once the air hits it bacteria can set in.
Answer:

I wouldn't trust it. Formula can be funny, and this is a little one you're feeding, not a big, robust guy. Don't want to invite tummy troubles or introduce bacteria baby can't handle. Not worth the pennies (ok, dollars) saved. Maybe weigh this against the cost of buying smaller cans.

Is it possible to make it up and freeze it in individual servings? Would take up a lot of freezer space, but it's an idea.
Answer:

Freezing the liquid was my thought also. It seems to me that should be OK, maybe ask the ped? You know Similac will say no, they want you to buy more formula!!
Answer:

My ds is 15mo now and just got off formula and on to whole milk about 3wks ago. Because he was down to only two sippy cups a day of formula we had an opened can for at least two months and he was ok. I do think the can says to not freeze the powder or the made up formula. You could check their websites.
Answer:

Thanks for your help! I was thinking, too, maybe I can share it with a friend or donate the whole can. I got such a good deal on it. I should have known better than to buy such a big can when we don't use it so much. Live and learn, I guess.
Answer:

I did the same thing! I did get a whole bunch of single packets though in the mail and was able to use them for a looooong time. I think you can buy them too. Then I was lucky and a friend that has a 4 yr old as her littlest, got 16, yes 16 cans of premade formula in the mail saying congrats on your new baby so she gave them to me! I signed up on every website I could find and didn't get any 16 cans of formula!!
Answer:

the powder last a lot longer than the liquid. I would be very leary of using the opened liquid formula. Once open, bactaria can get in. I would ask the ped. first.
