Ask:
My 7 yr. old 2nd grader is having a hard time learning her spelling words. Last year she was almost always an A+, and this year so far it's all B's on spelling.
Some of next week's words include: cattle, safety, fence, carefully, dry, by, and slow.
6 are vocab, 10 are spelling with long o, short e, etc.
I made flash cards. She gets words on Mon. and has a practice test Thurs. If she does not get 100% she retakes it Friday. So last night I made them, thinking reviewing them gives her Fri, Sat, and Sun before her teacher introduces them on Monday. This is the first week I am doing this.
A lot of her "spelling" words, she knows fairly easily. It is the vocabulary words from their reader that gives her the most trouble.
I also made a word search on the computer. I want her to practice writing them.
Other tha that, do any of you have ideas? My sis homeschools, I can't get ahold of her, and I am not sure if my nephew is doing spelling yet. He should be, he is in first grade, but he is advanced in some areas, and behind in others.
Can anyone suggest any computer games where I can input her words? Or other gmes to play at home? I also try to use them in notes to her I put in her lunchbox.
I appreciate any advice you can offer!
Answer:
Actually, I think you are already doing a GREAT job! Sounds like you are on top of things. The only other thing I would suggest is maybe having her write a short story or few lines using her words. You are already doing flashcards, writing them over and over and working on them before the week starts, I think you are doing great!
Answer:
Thanks! I can see she is frustrated with all of it! I want to help in areas I can.
Answer:
My dd always had trouble learning her spelling words. What we did every night was give her a spelling test with the words. So she had to write them. One reason we started doing that was that we noticed she could spell them orally better than she could write them. So we actually made her write them. Then if she missed any, she had to write them a certain number of times. Then the next night we'd do it again...and again. Every night until the spelling test. She HATED it, but she did always finally learn them and would get an A in spelling. HTH
