The show was done in present time with some flashbacks. The flashbacks showed that the Dad was accused of killing a woman (I belive she was his secretary or paralegal - he was a big winning attorney). Apparently it was 6 days before his murder trial. He ran so that he could get time to prove that he was being framed.
That is all we know right now.
