Ask:
We just bought a new house. I'm trying to decide where to start. It's a blank slate right now. All the walls are white & I just can't have that! So where do you start? I think I want to start in the main living areas, but there's a big part of me that wants to start in the Master Bedroom. What to do, what to do....
Answer:
I would start in the living room because thats where you spend most of your time and i would pick ypur colors and window treatments first that way you can decorate and you have an idea of your style...chris
Answer:
If it were me, i would do the living room first, only because i want it cozy and relaxing and it's where we spend the most time. That way when you are relaxing/resting from all the work you have been doing in other areas of the house you aren't sitting there looking at white walls and feeling like you can't relax because you need to decorate the room you are trying to relax in.KWIM?? The kitchen would be next for me too.
Answer:
I always did the living room/ family room first...It's where you spend most of your time. Then build off of that...so if the kitchen is off the living room, I'd hit the kitchen next...and so on and so on....
Answer:
I guess I am going to be the odd one we did all the bed rooms first. I wanted to get them organized right from the start so we did thoose. then the kitchen and the living room is going to be last. Since there is a lot of room in there to move things around and still have it liveable. Un like the bed rooms I want a good night sleep and be able to find everything needed to get ready. But that is just me and also I have to do a complete room before starting another. So we did dd room first then ours then the kitchen and then the living room the baths are going to be done last since I want to do a major over haul in them.
Answer:
Well, I'm an oddball I guess. When we built this house we actually painted the laundry room first. I then did the powder room. WHY this way? You walk through the laundry room to come in from the garage. So it was getting banged up in there. And I knew once painted, it was not a room I would necessicarily redecorate. Once done, it's done.
Then my powder room is ragged off paint in a light cocoa kind of color. I change my decorations and towels to match the seasons in there. So that was an easy choice.
We then did the guest room, as that also is a room once done it probably won't change anytime soon.
Then I made up my mind on the kids rooms, dining room. We wanted new living room furniture so I waited til we knew what we wanted. And I think we did our room just prior to that.
Last fall, my SIL came to visit and we did the kitchen. That was a tough one to pick the color for.
DH finished the baby's room last night. Now I need to do only the kids bath and our bath. The hallways need done, but they will stay white.
So I had my own little rhyme and reason as to how it worked for me! Good luck!
Answer:
I think it's nice to start in the front entry, since it's usually a small room and it's the first thing people see! If you don't have any entryway, by all means the living room. I think the public rooms of your house are top priority.
Answer:
We started in the bedroom that's the guest room/office. We had never done a lot of painting etc and we wanted to try out our skills first. We figured that most people coming into our house wouldn't see the office so if we really messed up it wouldn't be that big of a deal!
Then we did the livingroom/dining room because it was hideous. We actually did our master bedroom last. We figured we could put up with the ugliness (think lots and lots of 80's style rose and blue plaid wallpaper etc.)--no one else had to see it except for us.
Good luck with your redecorating. Hope it goes smoothly. BTW, consumers report rated Kilz and Dutchboy from walmart very highly. Don't spend the big bucks on Beher or whatever if you don't have to. But it is worth it to get the quality paint because it takes fewer coats, lasts longer, and clean nicer.
Answer:
Kitchen, I think it is the heart of the home, then the living room. When people come to visit they see these rooms first.
Answer:
The house we bought is all white walls too, but with too kids I am not decorating it till they can sit still and not make such a mess! I decorate the masterbedroom first, then my in-laws bedroom and next the kids bedroom, then living rrom in about 3 years!
