i know this message has been posted for a while, but i don't see an answer, so this is how i do it.....
i like beer brats, so i boil ours in beer and sliced (yellow or white) onions for about 20 minutes until they're cooked, and then i put them on a baking sheet and broil them in the oven on low (or high, if they're completely cooked) until the outsides are nice and browned and crispy. then i brown the buns in the broiler on low. the onions you boiled them with are great on top with a spicy brown mustard!
