Wiping? What age?

Ask:
My dd just turned 4 yesterday. I think she is well old enough to start wiping herself when she goes #2 now. Granted I know it will take practice and Ill still need to make sure she gets it good but she needs to do it herself. She refuses. Any tips?
Answer:

I don't have any great tips. But, I do keep wipes in the bathroom too for Aiden. He's 5 & has been wiping himself since he was about 4 1/2. You can use regular wipes or the "Kandoo" brand wipes that are smaller.

And make sure you tell her to wipe front to back!
Answer:

That is how mine learned, too...keeping the wet wipes in the bathroom. We had to establish rules of only using one or two, but they eventually got it! My two and a half year old is already wanting to do this herself, so I definitely think a four year old could be expected to! Kids are funny about what they insist on doing or not doing!!! Good luck!!

I wanted to know how do boys wipe? I truly don't know and DH is not going to help at all.

Thanks, April

Thanks, April Marcus started wiping by himself just after he turned 4 yrs old. The incentive was going to preschool and being potty trained and wiping himself. He gets off the toilet, stands, takes a Kandoo or toilet paper and goes front to back. He will call me into the bathroom if he needs help on a messy one .
Answer:

Thanks, now I can start working on that. I taught him to shake last week and I found out about care for the intact penis today, so we just need to wipe correctly and learn how to pull it through the unders and pants. That will be a mess!

Answer:

Target has the cheap brand flushable wipes. I keep a tub in all our bathrooms. Julia turned 4 last month and I do wipe her messy ones. I need to work on that too, but I'm worried she wouldn't get it clean enough. I'd say by 4 1/2 we'll have it down.
Answer:

My dd is 3 1/2 and would not wipe at all! As soon as I brought home the Kandoo wipes and told her they were just for her, she has wiped every single time by herself. I'm sure reading through the posts it may not sound like much but it is the only thing to work for my little one.
Answer:

Have her use her own wipes? Ds will wipe (he's almost 5) and has for awhile. I buy him Huggies Cleanteam flushable wipes and I found by far and wide the best flushable wipes out there. They have small 'ridges' on that...*stuff* clings to and gets them cleaner.

I agree. The Kandoo wipes are great. It took DD several months before she had it down. We told her she had to know how to do it before she could start school because the teacher won't do it for her.

The front to back thing was the hardest thing to get her to do. She still doesn't completely get that.
