three year old cold

Ask:
my three year old has a cold...sniffles all day...cant get him to blow..ive been giving him tylenol, motrin...nothing seems to be working...hes restless at night and crabby during the day...suggestions???
thanks.
Answer:

My ped always recommends pediacare. We use that if ds has a cough and sniffles

If the sniffles keep up and his nose gets more and more congested try a humidifier in the room. I do that when all else fails. That and elevating his pillow up a bit so he can breath better!
Answer:

try letting him take a shower. The steam helps loosen things up. Also humidifier in room can help.
Answer:

My dds are 2 and 3 and horrible when it comes to taking medicine. The Johnson vapor bath is great for a cold as is the vapor outlet plug ins. Hope he gets to feeling better!
Answer:

Along with everything mentioned above to make him/her comfortable, my ped reccomended we get saline drops and before bed to put a drop in each nostril. I know they are only sold as nasal sprays, only get the salene and water one. But it you tip the bottle you can get a drop out of it, I was skeptical, but by golly it was the best night sleep he got in about a week!
Answer:

Saline Nose Drops. They are not medicated, so no side effects, they clean up the nose. It is terrible t try to get the drops up the nose, kids hate it of course, but it will clean up his nose. I use them with both my kids.

My son has a cold and he hates the medicine too. He does like the chewable tablets, so we have gotten some Triamintic. It works, but it says an older age with two tablets. We only take one as my ped recommended.
Answer:

We use zicam here for colds. There is chewable, swab for nose or nasal spray. I have a hard time getting my 4 yo dd to chew so we do the swab and/or spray. I also use a homeopathic medicine called cold calm and c-plus cold tablets for my 10 mo. old (same as hylands' teething tablets). HTH!! For nighttime I like those vapor patches that I just put on the outside of her pj's or just vicks under her nose too. If it develops into a cough, they have ones for cough (the patches).
Answer:

Along with the above mentioned remidies, I usually make sure my son gets extra vitamin C, in the form of oranges, orange juice, some diluted apple juice, or even a chewable vitamin. My mom used to make us take echinacea and golden seal, but OMG it tastes horrible so I wont do that. I try to just make sure my son gets lots of fluids and eats as healthy as possible to boost his immune system. (Not that he eats junk normally, but I try to get extra fruits and veggies in him when he starts to get sick and around cold and flu season). I also play the blow the tissue out of mommies hand game. lol I made blowing his nose a game by getting him to try and blow the tissue out of my hand. When he blows, I quickly wipe his nose and whoosh my hand back acting like he blew it back. He loves it and it works everytime! Hope he feels better soon!!
